Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

so im putting a 1.8l 20vt in my mk2 golf gti 8v ive srouced out a couple of engines but can someone please explain to me the diffrences in diffrent 1.8l fwd turbo motors....firstly for the motor swap to be plug and play type im meant to be using a AGU but ive sourced out a beetle turbo half cut for 2 grand which has done 30,000kms which is a 1.8l turbo drive by wire and think has vvc..BUT the half cut comes with the pedal box for the drive be wire,, ive noticed with the changes in 1.8l engines that its drive by wire and has vvc...i just want to know if the engine mounts on the 1.8lt turbo series all run the same mounts?!!!! i really need help because the AGU engines bolts directly to mk2 mounts and is drive by throttle cable but do they change mounts through diffrent year models of the 1.8lt turbo engine, if someone can briefly answer my question ill be a happy man and get that beetle half cut and start the engine swap.... im pretty sure the engine in the beetle is a AWU

The AGU has an early block which has the provision for the MK2 engine mounts. The only thing I can thing of is that you go and have a good look at the front cut and see if you can see the required provision on the block.

Also the QPeng site might be helpful. Google it if you haven't heard of them.

I'd get the ECU immobiliser defeated and run the drive by wire.

I definitely believe using the std ECU and having the immobiliser defeated is a much more sensible option.

Qpeng has some good info on the actual swap though.

Yep as mentioned you can use any transverse 1.8t and it will mount straight up to the mk2 mounts. BUUUT, if you are going for over 200bhp then the mk2 020 gearbox wont handle it. This would mean using the golf 3/corrado/ibiza cupra 02A box, and thats when you will need to just change the mounting brackets for all 3 mounts because the later box makes the whole driveline sit about 20mm further forward (even though both 020 and 02A boxes both bolt directly to the 1.8t). The 02A is also cable shift...

The qpeng site is very helpful, but after buying their plug n play kit i just couldn't get the thing to tune and it wasn't tuned right to start with. Still dunno why.

Ended up using their modified loom and wiring up a haltech. Now its awesome. Check out my thread in the conversions section for all the info you will need

              Matt too..

Nothing but dramas. I've tried tuning qpeng so many times... it's not a lot of fun.

There's a couple of threads kicking around with how to modify your fusebox to run CE2 with an adapted engine loom. Type CE2 1.8T into google. quite a few people have converted to run standard ecu --> heeeeaaaaps of chip tuning options with OEM ECU.
