Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

According to it's birth certificate, the MK2 turned 21 today.

Not too sure about it's early life but it sounds like an old woman pottered around the lower north shore in it for the majority of it's like.

When I got it it was running on three cylinders, one of the windows wouldn't wind up and you couldn't get in the drivers door. A week later it blew a head gasket.

Check out this water jacket death.

After I got it running again, with added twin manifold, downpipe and hi-flow cat, the paint needed a lot of love.

    Before restoration.

    Faded goodness.

    Post restoration.

While still replacing things, un ripped drivers seat, un molested rear parcel shelf, a lot of the idle components, haha there was one which taunted me untill I manned up. The heater core.

    Scary.

One it was done it would almost burn you!

Since those major hurdles it's had a H&R cupkit to make the ride height look normal and the headlight relay upgrade.

Now's she apples and back to her former glory, she'll be appearing on a few billboards around the city (Gordon, Liverpool, Heathcote, Parramatta, Five Dock) promoting a website called carhistory.com.au on the 1st of August. A fitting tribute.

I was going to take a photo of me pouring a yard glass of 98 RON petrol but that was a bit too douche chills.

I'll be honest, I've always been curious about this car, nice little read-up/time line.
Were the water jackets corroded/damaged or just gunked up with crap?
Also, I think I've seen a photo somwhere, but, could you throw a pic up with the cup kit installed?

      Hey Ryan

Corroded. The previous owner, who is now my cousins husband, used tap water instead of coolant.

      Sure.

You share a 21 yo with your brother and keep her in a shed - the story sounds like the beginnings of a european serial killer!

Potentially culturally and timing insensitive but funneh all the same.

Very nice. The stance is perfect - where did you get the cup kit from and how much did it set you back (if you don't mind me asking)?

I have been wanting to fix my heater for long time, but every time I see this I hold off

Red Mk2 Gti is the best looking Mk2

Looks great, the difference in colour is amazing. Just loads of cut & polish?

                Here's to another 21 years!

Yeah. A lot of it. That said my detailer wasn't expecting it to come out that good.

Got the A/c re gassed yesterday. It's colder than my MK5.

After 700ml of gas and new oil my mechanic told me they got as measurement of -3 degrees at the vent! Bring on summer...
