might be lowered like 30mm maybe. if you raise it back up, it'll be crap to drive, and you might still have to same issue (because of the increase in suspension travel...)

If any thing, go stiffer, that way the suspension wont travel as much and you wont rub. Or Roll you arches and trim your flares. Probably the easiest and cheapest solution really.

good day to you guys... yup! this is a 55 series its not a 60. try getting a 50 and also check the offset... hope this helps you

Why would raising and softening it to standard make it crap to drive???? Usually, people go backwards by fitting lowering springs and leaving the dampers as standard.

I agree that the extra travel of std springs could well cause the rubbing issue to persist - the offset needs to be addressed (can be done by changing the rim halves but would be expensive) or the tyres need to be narrowed.

mashman, why not contact a VW wrecker and ask about old MkII springs?

I'm referring to the uninspiring ride/handling of a stock car. Floating, un-direct etc etc.

A car with stiffened springs and standard dampers is worse - less roll, more direct response but worse in EVERY other way.

If you accept that a stock car will settle into a bend and lean (and float a bit over rises) you can drive them very fast - try hustling along in a rental sometime. Once the suspension is loaded by cornering forces, they usually feel very stable through bumps etc while a stiffened car with stock dampers will tend to bounce, wander and skip.

Just fitted a new set of stock springs from GAP, to go with the KYB dampers that were in the car, The ride has improved dramatically with no hint of scrubbing occuring through spoon drains etc. There is a small, and i mean minute increase in body roll, but ill take that over riding on what can only be described as almost no suspension, yes it looked cool, and im all for that if it still works properly this didnt. the shocks were all good and the springs are still settling down. I took the chance to but all the hoses and bits and pieces i needed from GAP at the same time as most of the frieght was for the springs (was 360US just for springs delivered in 6 days via UPS) and all the other gear added 15US in freight.

These are the H and R springs i took out, the front is the same measurements as the stock replacement with one less coil giving you a stiffer lower spring (same as cutting a coil on the standard spring) the rear had more coils but is wound in a progressive way but the tighter coils were bound up all the time affectively giving me a very short stiff spring. as soon as the admin will allow me i will put them in the for sale section, i have asked them to wave the 90day wait, we will see?

Good to hear it's sorted and that the KYB dampers weren't ruined by the stiffer springs.

That's very poor engineering with the H&R rear springs - it makes you wonder if they took the springs for a different, lighter car and decided "that's close enough" and rebadged them for a Golf MkII

my thoughts aswell, maybe for a lightweight track car but the numbers were right when i checked. Im all for low and cool aslong as the suspension will still work as intended or better. I think if you punted the car around a track it would be much better now unless the track was like glass, anyways im happy now though was amazed at how hard it was to track down stock springs. I think the car will still settle a little more after a couple weeks. Probably hard to wreck the dampers when they werent hardly moving??????????

                cheers

it sounds as if you have fixed the problem but if it still rubs do change your tire profile and if your not going to change the offset of the RS's then roll your metal arches and bond the plastic arch on,

I have no idea what the parts for changing the offset is in Oz is but in the uk second hand parts are readily available, contact some one like Ellie at Voodoo motor sports via email or David and Jeremy at just matz (only new) asking the same question, they can help. I should be shipping items over to Sydney in the next 45 days so could stick them in my shipment if that helps then forward them on when they get there
