G-8VXWWTRHPN My MK2 (with problems) - VWWatercooled Australia

Announcement

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

how would i check this? i checked the sparkplugs and stuff this afternoon, all good, it also starts straight away, thats why i thought fuel pump and not power prob...
also if these parts needed replacement, is it something i could get from VWspares? or have to buy brand spankers?

After you have this happen and it won't start, I would suggest you pull the plugs and see if they are wet - you may have a stuck/leaky injector?

Fuel pump relay can be tested by making a jumper wire for the fusebox and testing it that way (but you should be able to hear the pump running if it is) Generally fp relay are 67, 80 or 167, can be found on mk2 digi.

Get a jumper wire and put it between the 2 large pins on the relay socket, fuel pump should fire up and run constant. if car still doesnt start the problem is elsewhere

Is it running yet? If not, we can try to meet up on the weekend to see what's wrong?

            hey mate,
na still not working but i took it in to the shop. Went by on Friday to have a look at now the starter motor wont even kick. the car has been through the wars mate. The previous owners have done heaps of hidden 'handy' work which may have something to do with it.
            Thanks anyway

Check the temperature at both radiator hoses, upper and lower, touch it. On operating temperature there should be both the same.
if the bottem one stays cold there will be your thermostat stuck.
getting both are the same temperature it is the temperature switch in the radiator for the fan.
check also the coolant bottle cap. is the seal sitting in right?

Ye the coolant is full and the bottle seal is sweet. i didnt touch the bottom hose, but the top one was real hot. I'm not sure, but could it have something to do with an electrical problem? (last week i couln't start the car cause'something was draining the battery, bought new battery same problem (alternator not charging properlly, c the raidio/ radion fuse and that problem is now gone... weird wiring from prev. owners)

When you disconnect the radio and the problem is gone with the empty battery then you have to swap the red and yellow cable. Plus and switched plus
is the fan going when you left the car? it have to stop after a few minutes when the engine is of. if not the temperature switch is broken.
