I want to drive my car into a river and throw stones at it til it explodes.
I've just had a bunch of things all go wrong with mine all at once as well. One of the CV's had been knocking for ages, then the catalytic converter broke a couple of weeks ago, then a couple of days later the front engine mount bracket broke and every time I changed gears the motor was smashing down on the starter motor! Thankfully my tax return saved the day and I've had it all fixed. Runs & drives like a dream again. I was about ready to set fire to it for a while there.
Don't be at ease... the worries are never over. When changing the split hose over I discovered a fuel leak aswell (easy fix). I'm beginning to think if i brake hard the whole car may disintegrate....
In all honesty it has run like a dream in the last week, my only remaining worry is why my fuel consumption is so high when 90% of my driving is on the motorway. I'm averaging 8.1 l/100. years ago it'd often slip down to the 6's. Any ideas where i'm going wrong? There are no vacuum leaks that i know of....
5.8? sheesh thats low!! tameth, how old is your oxygen sensor? if its old its probably telling the ecu to send more fuel than it needs to. that reminds me, i gota change mine..
the oxy sensor is what i'm suspecting, It has never been changed in the 5 years i've been driving the car around. However a new one is $330 from the lovely people along at VW.... I would rather loan one for a week to narrow down the problem before splashing out at a stab in the dark at rectifying it/
Anyhow another train of thought- what is the fuel tank capacity on the aus mk2's? I can get nearly 700k's to the tank with motorway driving and running 98octane fuel. If it's only a 55L tank i should be getting closer to 900 with this sort of driving right (av 6L/100)? Who knows.... It seems like a huge distance for a car this old.
dont get an oxygen sensor from the stealer, wayyyy too expensive. buy a universal one off ebay and put it in your self. all you have to do is take the old one out, cut the wires, solder on the new one (3 wires), stick it back in. this one is what you want: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/O2-OX...spagenameZWDVW
the only difference between that and the $330 one, is that the dealer one already has the plug on the end. but hey, it wouldnt even take 5 minutes to solder 3 wires together, and you'd save over $250.
Thats interesting, i'm sure I managed the 6's at speeds of 100-110 going back a few years. i'd love to know what sort of mileage all you other mk2 owners experience?
I also need to go for a drive at 80k/hr for a while and see how that pans out. I'm sure that wont make me too popular on the pacific motorway...
My car has given me readings of as low as 5.7/100k when cruising at 60kph & my usual reading for the freeway is about 7.5/100k when travelling at 110-120kph ( I always sneak an extra 10%)
The best trip that I have done is to Sydney, getting 6.9/100k over 800k in one go . I even put the boot into it on the F3 & a few other bits along the way
I was very pleased
If my speedo cable breaks next week i am going to cry.... Oil change is on the cards for this weekend.
800k's out of a tank is great, i'm not game to go beyond the 650 mark as i'm sure i wont get much further. I'll see if i can get an oxy sensor locally, if not i'll just keep copping it and be thankful i dont drive a v8
