Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Disassembly of the Cluster

    Hello,

Planned on replacing/testing the oil pressure and water temp warning LED's in the Golf today. Had no problems taking the dash apart and removing the cluster.

However I've spent the last hour trying to figure out how to "unclip" this connector so that the flexy printed circuit will allow me access into the internals of the cluster, with not luck

All the nuts/screws are undone, the only thing stopping me from opening it all up is that connection (big white plug with greenish looking plug inside it). Does anyone know what to do/how to disconnect it?

    PITA of a job.
    Thanks

EDIT: Figured out how to do, have to slide it whilst using a flat head screw driver to lever it up.
Got into the insides of the cluster and decided its to dangerous to play with such old, brittle equipment, the LED's can stay dead.

    You're keen!

The MFA stopped working in my cluster and I got it fixed for $70. There is an old school tech dude in Sydney that I was told about.

    That's an option...

Put it all back together and went to put it in the dash.

Speedo cable has also fallen apart at the connection to the cluster.
It all connected up though and works, just with alot of tappety/knocking sounds.

Probably time for a new speedo cable?

Don't spose that tech can also replace dead LED's?

Ryan, I got an entire new cluster for $35; all I wanted was the Perspex cover

You could source a temp replacement to get you mobile and then look at getting yours repaired (to maintain your mileage) We have a few places in Melbourne also that repair clusters but they aren't always cheap.

Thanks Dave, I may just take you up on that offer.

The car is in a runnable condition, the only suspect part at the moment is the speedo cable, plus it seems virtually impossible to properly connect the speedo cable up.

I'm just on the verge of replacing the front tyre's + a bit of steering work.
The current cluster doesn't have working water/oil warning lights aswell as a MFA that doesn't appear to work at all.

            I'll send you a PM.
            Thanks

I'm sure you Can find someone in Brisbane. You could call these guys and ask, they must have been in business for 40+ years and are experts in vdo. They would be a good place to call and ask for advice and may have a suggestion for someone closer

Search eBay German, there are plenty over there, I've got one for $56 landed to my door, much much cheaper than get it repaired

You need to make sure the vacuum line is in good condition and connected to a vacuum spike on the intake.

The swingometer works, but the digital readout doesn't.
