  • 8v GTI Troubles!!

I have just done the head gasket and reassembled everything. I turned the key and vroom!! sounded great for about 3 seconds! Then instead of settling down and idling it just dies! I crank it up and the same thing keeps happening 3 seconds and dead!
I have changed all the usual sensors out that can cause running issues and have recently replaced the Idle Stabilisation Valve at great expense. I'm guessing it's a fuel pressure issue... Any other ideas or comments greatly appreciated. I'm hanging to get back on the road!!!

You may want to see if it's doing the same thing once you put a jumper in the fuel pump relay location. It may be getting an initial prime signal from the coil but no signal while running?

Or maybe the Regulator, but generally you can get it to run even without one.

Thanks for the insight Mikinoz. Do you know what number the fuel relay is on the board? The regulator is that gold coloured thingy on the end of the fuel rail yes?

Just been out to the garage and undid the fuel rail purge 7mm bolt. I then turned on the ignition to get the dash lights up. As expected a 2 second squirt of fuel from the pump priming then stopped. Then i turned the key to fire it up, the engine fires up the fuel starts spurting out again. But as before it then dies. However (with the bolt back in) i can rev the engine by continuosly stamping on and off the throttle but it's really struggling and as soon as i stop it dies.
From this i deduce it's not a fuel flow issue. Could it be fuel pressure? or is it electrical? I would of thought the fuel pump would give up slowly not all of a sudden! Im confused....

I had a similar issue and it was a clamp on the intake boot so I was sucking air that had not been metered by the AFR.

hmmm let us know what it is when you find the problem.
i just picked up another mk2 that needed a new main pump, replaced it and it ran fine for half an hour then splutted to a stop.
now it does what yours is doing, starts, runs for a second or 2 and carks it???
                          cheers,

                            Well guys,
I have got the bugger running. I pulled off the plug for the dreaded blue coolant sensor and Bingo she runs! But i only replaced it 6 months ago....So i had not even bothered with it thinking it would be ok being 6 months into it's service. Well there you go....There must be a moral in this saga somewhere. By the way, took it for a bit of a thrashing to celebrate and got a defect notice from the Filth!!! so now i'm back off the road again until i pay the Gov't some more money to poke and prod my car over the pits looking for more **** that may or not be wrong with it!! God is unkind this year!!

What was the defect for? I now have a spare blue sensor in the glove box they are so unreliable!
