Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Child seat restraints

    Hi guys,

Looking at a mk2 Atm but it has no child seat anchors, apparently there is supposed to be a bar behind the rear seats and it's missing. Is this what the anchors are on, and any idea what it's called and how hard they are to find?

    Thanks in advance.

only later models have it fitted, part. aus spec. they are very hard to find and is called a child restraint bar. quite easy to fit but dont know where you are going to find one, aren't common and most people who have them will keep them

No chance anyone would have a part number handy? I can always call work tomorrow and find out availability. It's surprising how many old VW parts are still available through VW. Last time I checked VW Australia had lots of mk1 exhaust rubbers in stock as an example.

Ha! I just posted photos of mine here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f98/...gti-51228.html
          I've a 1990 mk2 GTI.
Firstly I'm looking to check it's not structural in any way (I had a Mk1 which didnt have it, but this is a gti)
but I'm very keen to pull it out. I ride in Melbourne alot, and this thing is in the way.

Yeah that bar you linked to is it. It is safe to move, my only question is rego inspection in Vic, I don't know what they look for...

Thanks Mikinoz. @PranK I need to check with Vic Roads if it's required to have the bar fitted for rego so, I'll may hang onto it for the moment. However it's just a rectangular hollow section with a couple of sections cut out. A steel fabricator could knock it up in less than an hour, so I'm happy to send you all the measurements.

I just went through trying to get a hold of a child restraint bar. Its bloody hard! In my case it was to actually put a child seat in. I rang a few VW suppliers in Syd, without much luck and golfloon thought he had one but ended up not having one - mk3 bar's don't fit! Then member DangerDan was kind enough to lend me his. So they're out there. Good luck!

                  WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT.

Geez, talk about a blast from the past haha. How are you man? My brother and I have had loads of fun with our MkII GTI in the last 18 months - a well sorted example is definitely something worth having I hope you can find a good one!
