Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Why are small bumper MKII GTIs more desirable than the later large bumper ones?

I personally prefer the look of the large bumper bar model but it seems that small bumper bar models are more desirable amongst those in the know.

Why so? Is it looks or something else?

I did a poll about this on a uk site ( golfgti.co.uk) a few weeks backs.

Most people on there voted for big bumpers or what ever the car left the factory with.

I like small bumpers myself, never had a big bumper golf.

I think in Oz the love of small bumpers comes from them never having been available.

    The grass is always greener....

Small bumpers- not available in Oz, but only really suit the ealry quarter vent window MK2s. I don't like the big bumpers- Make it look too modern (Plus they don't suit my MK2!)

I think its a fashion thing. A few years ago the trend in Europe was to convert small bumper cars into 90's spec (big bumpers) but now its gone the other way.

Personally i like both, but generally i think small's look best on 4 door cars...

and big's look best on 2 doors...

says who that small bumpers are betterer?!?

i don't know where you're basing this information on, and wether it's a national or international thing.

I like big bumpered two doors and small bumpered 4 doors as well, but some small bumpered OEM 2 door cars can look mighty fine too!

I think it is a grass is greener on the other side thing
To me a small bumper mk2 is just a big mk1

Yup, big bumpers are the shizzle.
Smalls look too old and like a pov pack C or CL.

Not really. Smalls came on all models up to 1987 inc GL's & GTI's. Older cars with small doors look sh*te with big bumpers.

Whatever is your bag of lollies, fashion, greener grass, etc. All play a part i reckon.
Big bumpers can look great, but need 16" rims to match, and whatever you do, IF you're putting bigs on an old smalls car, make sure you use the matching front arches or it will look "tacked on"
