    Déjà-vu hey Benough

You may have been told this already Depone, but a Bentley manual will come in very, very handy aswell.

BTW this car your checking out on Saturday, is it a Digi or K-Jet?

I'm not sure mate the guy has next to no info about it and I am real novice with Golfs...Will try figure it out by looking at pics on net and
      comparing them.

Thanks for all the tips guys will try do all that and run it for at least 15mins
      to see how it goes...

Hopefully the MFA works so I can see the temps etc

Wish I could pay one of you Golf heads to come out with me...bit of a minefield with a 20yr old car!

hope it all goes well! it'd be awesome if you could get dean from volkspower [or someone similar] to come along with you...

So...It was a bit of a let down.

Rusty as hell radiator, cracked to sh*t dash and brutal damage from some clown fitting stereo, cracked headlight, dodgy windscreen, broken aircon, cracked and damaged grill ( gti badge had been ripped off ) and was sort of revving a bit when it was just sitting there.

Over all the car actually drove ok....considering it had been in storage for over a year.

But at $3800 unreg and no RWC I just dont think its the car for a complete n00b like me.

          Will post pics later maybe.

yea, sounds kinda scrappy there, although they're your standard mk 2 problems basically!

imo he wants too much for it. you could get a neat mk 3 with reg and roadworthy for the much (with everything working too!, not that you're after a mk 3 though)

That's a shame. I got mine similar to that and I paid $2k for it. It's all quite fixable. I have a good dash with only 2 cracks in it if you're keen.

I was a total n00b when I got mine as well. I say lowball him and go for it! We'll all help you out!

How much do you want for the dash? I'll be on the hunt for a new one soon...

Good luck with the search for a MK2 Depone, its hard work but its worth it. Just keep in mind even the newest cars are 20 years old so none will be perfect. Mechanically they are very simple & easy to fix so minor issues aren't a big issue.

You just described most Aussie MK2's........

As others have said these are 20 year old cars that didn't age that well in our harsh conditions......expect to pour cash into just about what ever you buy that's the nature of these old cars.....mine was in ok condition, mechanically better than it's body would have you believe but regardless I've spent a stupid amount of money on it....

                    Go in with open eyes....

I suppose it depends if you can do a little bit of work on it yourself or whether you know a competent mechanic that can work on it for you sort of tax free. I bought an '85 (Mk2) that looked a lot worse and I only had to spend $500.- on the car (battery, breaks, oil change + radiator). As it was said earlier, Golf Mk2's aren't new cars but they are very robust and relatively easy and inexpensive to fix (compared to new vehicles with lots of electronics in them) plus the technology is straightforward. If you intend to hold on to the car for a long time, it is worth making these investments, in my opinion, because the car's reliability will eventually safe you heaps ... if you treat it right.

btw. in my two years in Sydney I NEVER needed an aircon. Hence, I wouldn't make this the condition to buy a car as long as the windows wind down ... ;o)

This was just stuff I could see from looking at it through my n00b eyes...I had no idea and the guy selling it had no idea either.

I could still get it but it just did'nt seem right at the time when I looked at it...I am pretty set on the other mk2 I have seen and drove briefly, its good to go as a daily and comes with a bunch of extras that the black gti just did not have.

Shame cos maybe if I had somewhere to work on it or had a bit more knowledge I could of released that cars potential...but it was a risk having been sitting around in a garage for almost 2yrs.

Little things like the aircon etc are not major I know but the engine looked in a right state, who knows what was going on in there, the guy was just looking to palm it off without rwc or anything.

I took the risky option last time I bought a car and it was a nightmare.

Ah well, it sounds like you've made the right choice considering.

FWIW MK2 A/C isn't as good as winding down the window. It's actually quite useless. Power Steering and A/C were an afterthough for the MK2, that's why they aren't anything special

More incentive for me to just leave my A/C the way it is....
