  • Europeans are far to lucky!

I realise most of you understand the amount of MK2's for sale over in the UK but browsing around Edition 38's for sale thread is just amazing.

    Edition 38 Forums -> Mk2 Golf & Jetta

MK2 GTI's rangring from $700 (Aussie) in driveable condition to mint condition GTI's for a smidge over $5000. 3 doors, 5 doors, 16 valvers, 8 valvers, 2ltrs, 1.8ltrs, big and small bumpers

The UK must be a candy store for MK2's

there are alot but alot are utter tat.

The majority that are under $1000 dollars have pretty bad rust and have been neglected.

Having said that my black 1988 5dr 8v cost me $500 + $200 on repairs for the MOT (roadworthy) and my 89 16v cost $1000 but the paint was rough - both were rock solid and rustless.

for $5000 though you can get a real gem.

      X2

Id expect to see alot more rust considering Europe's weather, but still the thought of a MK2 for less than a grand

Compared to Aus it is as you say a candy store. But as with everything it's not as great as you'd think.
It really is buyer beware especially if you step outside the relative safety of a forum. The amount of really sh*te cars massively outweighs the minters. If you have a decent budget, 2K or more, you are laughing.

At the end of the day though parts are cheap, parts are plenty-full, there are loads of specialists, loads more choice........

It's not just MK2's though. MK 1-4's can be had for less than 1K and if you've got a 10K budget the choice is amazing.

If you want a fun game, set yourself an imaginary budget (say 10K) and go to,

see what you can get. It'll make you sick!

It's all about supply and demand rule, in UK a lot of people want to get rid of their 16V 2 doors Mk2, in here we view it as treasure.

            some stunners on there.

I don't understand why all used cars are so expensive in Oz ,it's not like they cost that much more here in the first place. It just seems like deprecation is very slow after they're 3 years old compared to most other countries.

I promise that if I become a millionaire I will go shooping for MK1 and MK2's in the UK and ship quite a large amount of them into Australia......say 50

to add on, in Bosnia, mk2 golfs are pretty much Australia's commodores. There are at least 5-6 down every street!! from diesels to gti's. Parts are plentiful as they are stolen and get rebirth. But seriously, there are $hit loads of them there, that is where my love for them began.

Here is a pic of my dads mk2 we bought arnd 1996.
                      8v Ibiza GTI > 8v mk2 Golf GTI > mk3 VR6 > 8v Ibiza GTI > 2D CL+vr6...

you hit the nail on the head mate, there are loads of mk2 in the uk, yes there are loads of rot boxes but you get what you pay for, at the moment I know of at least 5 show standard mk2's, basic speck being things like 16" rs, recaro interiors, with various engine combinations, vr6 sir, ok then how about an abf, no well 20v turbo, supercharged vr6, and the list goes on, owners ask £7k approx,

today, I spent the day cleaning my car at the workshop my abf lump was preped and we had 3 mk2 show cars, 2 mk1's and a 1975 scirocco, all getting ready for players but thats the sharp end of the scale and the quality of finnish unfortunatly costs far more than the £7k asked for.

The guys here look over to you guys and drool over skylines and how much they cost out there, its the same boat but different colour grass
Don't know where I'm going but I do know where I've been

Just to add on somthing I heard.
I met up with a Pommy bloke a few weeks back who admired my MK2 and offered to "show you how to really drive it".... funny fella

He was saying that P platers (whatever they are over in the UK) can't afford to own a MK2 GTI's because the insurance companies consider them sports cars? (which they are to an extent).
Compared to Australia where they're only considered as an ordinary small car to the insurance companies.

I'm aware of at least half a dozen under 25's in the uk are paying $4-5000 a year for insurance on mk2 and mk3 gti's.

                            glad i'm old.
