  • Fuel Pump issue?

    Hi guys,

So symptoms are that sometimes when starting there will just be no fuel getting through, when its running it seems OK, no issues. Its gradually got worse to the point where sometimes I just cant start it at all, then 30 mins later it seems slightly better and will start with a bit of effort. Ive checked electrics (inc relay, seemed ok) and they all seems to pass which makes me assume that fuel pump is on the way out, could it be anything else?

When its not starting at all, Ive checked the at the intake to the fuel rail and there is nothing coming through at all.

    Cheers,

    Simon

@ the OP, what's the engine and injection type? If it's Kjet 16V, when you spin the motor, fuel will only be injected when the flap in the fuel distributor lifts up due to the vacuum create by the engine.

A bad accumulator between the pump and fuel distributor or a leaky injector will let the fuel pressure drop when the engine is at rest. This will make it hard to start.

Sometimes, flicking the key on and off a couple of times before starting works for getting it to run better. The fuel pump relay runs the pump briefly to bump up the system pressure, this combats leaky injectors to some extent.

Failed control pressure regulators also contribute to bad starting.

The best way to troubleshoot K-jet is with the pressure gauges installed.

30 Relay controls the fuel pump. Try tapping it when trying to start the car.
Or take the cover off above the pump, put 12v to the 2 big terminals and you should hear the pump start. If the car then runs, its a relay or wiring issue.
If pump is dead with power to it, you need a new one.
Car is a Mk2 with a Mk3 fuel tank and pump and ABF 16v EFI.
