Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My MK 2 got bent out of shape

Driving to work this morning in my all original 1990 MK 2 GTI and some clown decided he needed to alter the front of it by reversing into it, even with me holding the horn down to warn him it would not be in his best interest!

Anyway, insurance will sort it, but I am in need of some odds and sods:

    bonnet
    radiator support panel
    GTI grille
    one outer head light
    one inner head light

Hopefuly the passengers side fender can be straightened enough and remain (thus not disturbing original paint on fender bolts etc. I will know more once the car has been gone over tomorow.

If your dismantling a similar car with no damage to any of these items, please email me at: adbritcher@internode.on.net

    Thanks- Aaron.

Good luck mate, you better brace yourself, the insurance company is likely to want to write it off, they are just too expensive to repair in Australia......those parts (assuming they could even get them) plus painting would be well over $2k I'm guessing......I hope I'm wrong for your sake...I guess you can always take the cash and do it yourself

dave is right, my 16v door was dinted by somebody and it was $2200 to fix. You can push to have it repaired but Don't be tempted to find the cheepest panel shop though as the work will not be up to VW/your standard. i use to work in the industry.

Yes I am prepared for the outcome... The quotes for parts and labour will be with the insurance company within the next day. About $2k or a tad over is the cost I am up to as well.

If it does become an economic write off, I will do the work anyway due to the lowish km's on the clock. Plus mechanicaly, the car is spot on.

I will keep you posted on the outcome. Fingers crossed. We have to keep these MK 2's on the road people!
