  • Has my car got hydraulic lifter ?

I've read different information about EV engine head in my 1986 Mk2.
Some people say it's hydraulic lifter, some say solid. Shimmed lifters on MK2 GTI - Club GTI

Haynes manual doesn't say it is hydraulic, so assume it is solid.

Engine is making crazy tappet noise, is opening the head the only way to confirm ?

Just need to remove the rocker cover. Probably time for a new gasket anyway.

If its a mk2 and its clicking then its usaly hydro. Like pete said just remove the rocker cover. New lifters cost about $80 for all 8 and arnt to hard to replace. The problem is that they the little spring and seals and stuff inside them get cloged up and they dont lubricate properly anymore....or something like that according to vortex.

My GTI when cold makes a loud tappet/lifter noise but's just waiting for the oil to come up. It essentially vanishes when the oil arrives.

Are mine on the way out also?

it'll be hydraulic, IIRC they moved to hydraulic very early mk2, like 84-85
