Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

i know exactly what u mean!!!!!!!

mostly lock and door mechanisims in mine...
i put foam tape stuff allong the doors under the linkages..helped a bit.
my car is runing konis on near the stiffest setting too, makes it hard to stop rattles.
basicly go around everything and tighten it all up. its one of my biggest problems using the mk2 as a daily driver. it gets a new rattle every week.
dash suround squeeks, inner door pannels rattle...
    arrrrrrrgh! needs some good tlc...
    Cheers, Benny

      The consequences of aging

Rattles and squeaks are all part of owning a >10yo car, no matter what the make or model. Try owning an old diesel , on tickover it sounds like a percussion band in full song. I agree with Benny.... go into the places where the rattles appear to come from and tighten everything that you can. Look for linkages, levers, pins and the like and wherever possible damp them with foam (but don't impede their movement ) Foam plastic is cheap, very versatile and you can get it from any Clarke Rubber store or upholsterer. Oh.... And while you're inside the doors give the lower seams a spray of fish oil to do yourself and future owners a favour (but hold your nose!).

      Empathise with this guy

my dash is driving me nuts at the moment something is loose around the stereo and i have a rattle around the interior light that has sprung up in the last week. My car isn't to bad actually. nothing could beat my first mk1 or my parents 64 splitty that is the king of rattles, you could barely hear the engine over them

im actually going on a squeak hunt today , as i do every 3- 4 months, haha.
its weird, my mk1 is 31 years old and doesnt squeek at all...(yet)
i found the most common problem with the instrument surround is when people have taken them off previously some screws get forgotten about.
if you have a squeak around the stereo, slide it out and make shure the screw hiding just inside the hole is there....also one behind the headlight switch seems to be a common one to go missing...mine was, and it drove me insane....
