  • Replace Dash Illumination Bulb?

Im going to attempt to get the left side of my dash lit up this weekend, it looks like the bulb (is it just a bulb??) on the left hand side has died....from what i can see its not back lit, its illuminated from a bulb facing it, is this right?

(Not my dash - I wish!)

Questions are...Is it just a bulb? what type? is it easy to get to and replace? and finally...could it be just a fuse gone?

    Cheers

From what I know they are 12V 2W bulbs with a black base. Part number is 431 919 040

Im not sure if other bulbs may fit, could be a special type. I dont think it would be expensive from the VW dealerships.

first take out all the buttons switches on the dash pannel..(and cd palyer)
behind some of the switches u will see screws. take em out and take facia off the heater controls . take the whole facia plate off and then u will be able to access the 2 screws on either side of the instrument cluster.
lift it up wards and tilt it a bit....allong the top edge u will see/ feel the 2 globes along the top, wiggle them around a bit first and see if they start working..if not, discon all the plugs and speedo drive an pull the cluster out....
sorry if im not making much sense. hahaa, ive been to a BBQ and im a bit sleepy from intake.

                  hehe!
an angle grinder is handy too...
but yea, as Loon said, the sliders on heater (just pull out) and the heater control knob.....i know i had trouble with the heater bit the first time, and i broke the surround, so be careful when u get to the heater controls.

I have a spare speedometer and had a better look at these lamps as shown below. The lamps are manufactured by OSRAM. I have seen just the lamps on their own at work. Maybe they pull out somehow out of the holders.

Photos quite handy!!!! I just ripped the dash out, was able to get to them fairly easily, as someone else mentioned, they just turn 90 degrees and pull out.

I can see how they would come loose very easily and become tempramental as other people have found....waiting for the VW daily parts delivery to come in now.

Im sure it will take me 3 times as long to put the dash back in....correctly that is

New globe fitted and works perfectly!!! Thanks everyone!

Speedo was working perfectly too (checked everything before i put the dash back in) but something must have popped out as the speedo isnt moving, rev counter is fine though...oh well...more dash pulling next weekend

Which plug am i looking at for the speedo, is it obvious? I didnt really look when i had it out...

It's not an electronic speedo. It works off the bowden cable.
