Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Central Locking and 2nd Gear

    Hello,

I have a 91 oz mk2 and recently the central locking stopped working. You open the drivers door and can hear a clicking for about 30 seconds coming from the boot like something is trying to open the locks but failing. Is this a big/expensive thing to fix?

The only other problem with the car is getting down into second gear sometimes. You really have to kinda jam it, or you can feel the gear teeth rubbing on something. Am I going to need a new gear box, or is it just a small part that need replacing?

    Thanks!

The second gear problem is very common with MK2's, not usually as bad as that though. I bought a gearshift renewal kit from www.vdubmachine.co.uk in the UK, (should be less than $30 landed) this fixed mine.

hey mate, you should have a listen around all the doors and anywhere there might be a leak in the vacuum system for the central locking. sounds like you have a leak if the pump runs and sucks for about 15secs or what ever. something might have just fallen of and its an easy fix. and try adjusting your linkages for the shifter, then new bushes then new oil if it does work on each step.

If anyone else is getting this, perhaps we should do a group buy?

is it just the linkages you have to change. i heard that it was the synchros that stuff up on them.

Thanks everyone for the replys. I will have a look around the doors for the leak in the central locking. The gearshift renewal thing sounds a bit too technical for me, but I am glad to hear that its not an expensive fix!

Had a similar issue with the central on Nicks Mk2, turned out to be that one of the, I don't know what you call it, pull up lever things for the door locks where hitting on it's collar in the door card, took off the collar and now it works every time.

              Could be something similar.
