Nope. It's definitely a mk2 16 valve '84. Pretty darn rare, from what I can gather. Was a private import from the UK. Even the VW Australia history brochure that I got when the mk6 came out says they don't exist.

    Anyway, here's some pics:

I don't wanna waste people's (and my) time checking the car out if it's not worth it. Be great if people could let me know what they think something like this is worth, so I can work out if I can be bothered selling it?

    Cheers

Looks like an early car with a 16v put in later. Show us an engine bay pic.
Needs a paintjob and if I was doing that, I would take the bodykit off and paint it all.
In that condition, as a runner, I would value it at maybe $5-6k.

No 16 Valvers that old from the factory. There's a couple of things strike me about it. The kit looks genuine, seen a few of them in the UK. Often on well spec'd 86 16Vs with leather.

The colour is Lhasa Green I reckon. Oak green came out on the MK2 Campaigns late 87, just as the big doors came out. They had Rainbow trim as well.

There's no bee sting aerial on the roof, all 16Vs had them and a hole in the wing too, which had a proper VW bung in it.

As Matt says an early car with a replacement engine.

Ok the Mk2 was owned by a bloke called Brian Clearihan who ran an adevertising company in Melbourne.

Its a 1984 Model delivered in Germany to an Aussie tourist as an 8v. Once bought back to Oz it had put in the 16v to replace the tired 8v.

Bilstein shocks, 15x7 Zender wheels, has a genuine GTI interior, fitted with the Zender body kit late '89 ealry 90's from Carshine and was sprayed in Richmond. For the early 90's the car was a big hit in the Melbourne car scene.

Even driven and featured in many mags by famous and genuine car reporter David Morley.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I should have bought this car the time I saw it at Ringwood Train station parked into a tree.

I guess I'd consider offers above $6k. Any less, and it's not worth anyone's time.

If it was a genuine 16v maybe. But it's not.

Bit harsh mate. Its still a 2 door in Australia, with a running 16v.

Its still a GTI. Good base for a resto project.

This always happens when people put expressions of interest instead of just putting it up at a realistic price. No one is gonna jump in with a high offer, better to just price it realistically for what you will sell it for.

i would honestly value this at about $5000 due to a) the rarity of the shell, and b) all the goodies associated with 16v motors, but c) the condition of the exterior

it would need a body tear down though i think. i had similar amounts of clearcoat peelage.

defs agree with matt that this is an awesome resto project.

does it have all the running gear of the 16v? ie 256mm brakes, bigger brake booster/MC.

                        also what injection system/engine management?

good luck with the sale. these are getting scarcer by the week.

If it helps...There is a 1992 GTi - Black 5 door - 167klm on carsales - at a dealer for $6k - With books - car looks to be in pretty good nick.

I agree - better you put a price on it you will be happy with and let the market decide.

Having said that - yours is a neat looking car - like the body kit

I still haven't found any time to do anything with it. Seems a shame for it to just be sitting about. I'd accept an offer of $4,000 if anyone is interested?

that's a pretty good price, should definately get some more interest at that price.

I'd love to take this on, but unfortunately, it's a bit beyond my price bracket.
