I had a 92' Mk2 4 door small bumpers back in the UK and that had the side intrusion bars.
Not sure if that helps but I'm sure someone like GolfLoon would know....
one 88 2 door mk2 and one 87 2 door MK2 GTI...
both U.K import, no intrusion bars..I think that is just an ADR requrement for Aus made and delivered cars, most Jap imports have no intrusion bars either.
i've never heard of a uk mk2 having door impact bars and i had golfs and jettas over there.
if i remember correctly it was one of the safety features used as a selling point on the mk3 !
Its actually dependant on the guy doing the compliance as to whether they are required or not!

Been thinking about this and remember when I was in Canberra steves doors were a lot lighter on his early 2 piece glass door. I might be wrong but could have been brought in with the one piece glass no?
