Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Battery light on, but no issue??

    Hi folks.
My girlfriend had to use the Golf last night.

She was driving down the freeway and heard "something small come off" and then the battery light came on.

The car still starts and runs fine.

    Any thoughts???

as in the blue light or the actual battery symbol?

Was the road wet? I know that my GTI had no V belt splash guard and when it rained the belt used to slip and the blue light would come on sometimes.

It'll run for quite a while with the alternator not charging Wade.

My guess is the tensioner bolt fell out and the alternator isn't working.

      Check under the bonnet first.

          Yea thanks guys.
Just got home from a long night on the roads with no electricity.

I should've checked before posting here! The belt from the crank pulley to the a/c came off. That a/c pulley in turn then drives the belt for the alternator (which was still there, fooling me at first glance yesterday!)

Perfect excuse to prioritise the conversion this week.

Now tuesday's trip to the workshop will definatley be the last for the GTI in its current spec....
