  • Potential Mk2 GTI

Guys, given that my GT is close to being gone, im looking at a march/april delivery for a new car, was thinking about a mk2 to get around in for the few months and have some fun. Turns out that the guy most seriously interested in my car is replacing a Mk2 GTI with it.

The conversation obviously came around to a part exchange. Ive not had a mk2 since about 2001 and dont have much idea about what they are worth. Figured id post up and get some advice.

    Here goes.

    1991 Golf GTI 8v- Manual
    211,000km
Owner bought the car with 75,000 12 years ago
Reverse, not 100%, lost tooth from cog possibly
    Bodywork, Sound - Silver
Drivers Door - New Door, Red sprayed Silver with some chips at the edge showing red back thru.
Uses a bit of Oil and water
    Reg - March
    Tyres OK

Interested to hear opinions on the gearbox issue and what its gonna be worth.

My intention is to drive it and fix it up to sell after my new car arrives, unless i fall in love with it and it becomes a 2nd car.

    Cheers

Second hand gearbox is $850 from us, or we can replace the reverse gear in that one for $500.

Just got back from having a look at it, car is in pretty good condition, the reverse noise is not a major issue on it, pretty certain the synchro on 2nd is shot, bit of grinding to get it in. Bodywork is in very good nick for its age, just had a new rear bumper fitted to it recently afteer a small accident.

Its using a bit of water, but has been pressure tested and seems to be excessive seepage.

front tryes are on the limit. rears are about 50%

Front drivers seat has a small tear on the edge.

Windscreen 100% and the sticker arond the rear window is suprisingly good for its age. The car has lived under a car port for at least the last 7 years if not more which shows.

Took a couple of pics. I reckon it stacks up.

looks pretty tidy overall. 3K doesn't seem too bad of an asking price imo.

Be nice to have over summer but not a deciding factor.

Defo be interested in the gearbox too if I end up buying it.

You dont need aircon, just windows all the way down, wrecking the mileage.

Looks like it just suffers from the usually plaques of a mk2 golf at that age. Second always seems to be stiff i've noticed on a few mk2's

The price from what others have said is good, hope you pick it up.

Were there any cracks in the dash as thats pretty rare to find. Any major rust or signs of a collision?

Actually I was quite pleasantly surprised to find the dash is 100%.

As I'm taking the car as a trade in for the GT final decision is not mine.

Oops, i forgot to mention, the car has had 2 small incidents, recently it got rear ended, not massive, but had a new rear bumper and the section directly above the bumper got resprayed (and im assuming pulled/filled). No other damage and the rear quarters and floor are 100% and still original. The drivers door was replaced a couple of years ago after someone hit into it, door was red and resprayed and on the edges some red is showing thru, nothing a bit of touch up wouldnt sort and no other signs of it being replaced.

Rust wise, it has lived under a car port, there are none of the usual rusts spots around the windscreen and bonnet. Even the sticker around the rear window is intact in in reasonably good nick.

OK, i had the car checked out properly by a mechanic last night, picked up a few things that it needs. As i don't have much of a workspace would have to be done by a mechanic, so looking at in the region of about $2k to put it all right and have a mint car out of it.

Some of the things it needs are, Left CV, Track Rod Ends, front brake lines, Rear Wheel Bearings, Cam Belt, Gearbox, 2 Tyres, front shocks.

Starting to think it may be a more sensible option to just drive my GT for another 3 months and then try sell it again, ive had a heap of interest off carsales for it, so dont think it will drop any more than another $1-2k between now and feb/march. That is less than the risk id be taking on this if it ends up costing me over $4500 to get it on the road for only a couple of months.

What is this car, in mint condition going to be worth?

Steve in all honesty, your better just keeping the GT and driving it until Feb, rather than fix the mk2 and try and sell it. Selling one car is hard enough, let alone 2.
