The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Mk2 GTI on Carsales.... mine?

I've been looking around at Mk1s and 2's and think I've found the right machine. A 1990, original Mk2 in red with 160k on the clock. I just wanted to know what you guys think of it and if you have any advice when purchasing.

    Here she is: http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...d=125451E8D190

Now, I've been around to see the car, albeit when the dealership was closed, and it looks great. However, there are a few 2-3cm gaps in the seals on rear passenger windows. Is this normal?

I was also wondering if any of you know anyone who I can get to do a mechanical inspection of the car before I hand over money. Is this necessary as it's a dealership and will probably come with some form of warranty.

    Thanks in advance,
    Darragh

Hey mate. That's a really nice standard car there. You dont see many around unmolested like that anymore!!

I still reckon the price is a bit steep dude. It's an Aussie spec car with the RV digi engine. I'd prolly pay $5000 for it??

Most mk2's have gaps in the seals there. As long as the inner door membrane is still intact the water that gets in should just run out the drain holes at the bottom of the door.

I just got new scraper seals for mine and i even cut them a little long, but they still shrunk back and left a gap after a few days in the WA sun!

    Cheers,
    Wade

That looks terrific, looks completely original like it came from the dealer. Again, i wouldn't pay that much, esp. when they are valued around $2-3000. Looks like the interior is good though so try knock off a 1K and you'd probably have picked up a great car.

Cheers for the advice guys. I did think it was a little steep, and will offer 6k cash and see what he says.

I'll give him a shout and let you know how it goes!

that red one is immaculate! You'd be hard pressed to find one in that good a condition nowadays.

Yes, I've been over to see it twice, but it needs time in the repair shop. something about a water leak? he said he's had someone else in the day the ad went up and who now has first refusal. He doesn't seem like the type to budge on price but I'd still love it.

That said, there are a few other nice Mk2's on here that I'm considering.
