  • MK2 Rallye lights and grill...

I had a random thought today while looking for MK2 parts on the interweb, and thought about the Rally front end look with the square headlights ...

I was wondering if anyone here has ever done it, or even if the conversion is hard to do. I wasn't able to find any parts for it anywhere.

It is pretty rare anywhere to be honest, i had a mate who had one of those Kamei kits and had rallye front end on it, looked awesome. I think the headlights are a pig, but no pain no gain !

That wasnt a rally grill, that was an american jetta set up. If you have a look at the jetta that is being sold here, its the same as that.

The rally set up requires the headlight, grill and smash panel. You cannot moddify the standard round headlight smash panel to accomodate the big headlight and grill....well you could but it would need welding and alot of cuting etc...

Its a prity straight forward swap but its not cheap. IF you can find the gear it will set you back $1000 easy. Last time i looked it up it was about $1500 for NOS and not including shipping.

Rally front guards have a metal bodykit, not plastic and the lights etc are dear as poison.

Or get a Mk2 Jetta front end for the same (ugly) look.

I was just curious to see if anyone had done it...I personally like the round headlight look.

The lights and the grill below the on the Jetta are completely different to the Rallye...

Yeah there is a bit of difference:

I prefer the normal twin headlight golf over both of them still...

i do like the Rallye set up but its pretty expensive. the headlamps are the part that cost the most.

Jetta front ends i dont like as its the 'poor mans' version of the Rallye look.
ive seen both of these done loads of times in the uk

it would be easy to swap it over if you had all the bits.

I like the jetta front. I'd swap mine over if there were more out here.

Much as I like the Rallye lights, on a Rallye. They are in fact utter crap as lights at night!!

When you switch from dip to main beam, the dip turns off and you have 2 spot lights and no illumination directly in front of the car.

You can't fit big bulbs in the dip, as they overheat and blow all the time. The lens is really delicate and I have seen them broken with a steam cleaner at a car wash.

Personally, I think a MK2 looks best with single lights and black badges.

This was the look I was thinking about going, but with a badgeless grill and BBS RM's.
