after a thousandy mozzie bites and some roowd words under the breath.. AND a new speedo cable and a few hours..(and 3 attempts) Ayden and I got the speedo functioning again!
{why arent all the screws in the dash the same size?!?!?!}
loon, when you pulled the audi engine out of the jetta.. did you swap any of the plugs n whatnot? cause ben durie put new ones on when i took it to him.. wondering if that would have anything to do with the slow start aswell?
-wanna explain it in a way the verterans would understand there Aydos?
i found out today that the car has no reverse lights.. could be tricky with rego coming up.
It needs an auto electrician to hook up the coldstart valve and run a feed from the fusebox. THat is the only way you will cure the coldstart. It should be someone who understands kjet. Volvo or Saab mechanics. Durie doesn`t sound like he has much idea, but I bet he`s charging you.
Beau in Sydney could sort the wiring, but you need to drive down.
Reverse lights need a wire running from the switch on the top of the gearbox. They never check em for rego anyway bro

"Durie doesn`t sound like he has much idea, but I bet he`s charging you."
If you have an aircooled VW He is the man to see, does absolutely amazing work with them, But with watercooled cars , i learnt the hard way when i had the toledo, he charges like a raging bull, and ends up changing things you didnt even take the car in for.
yeh.. he didnt even want to look at my car when i originally took it to him. i havent taken it anywhere but to ayden since i got my p's.. we've been able to do everything we've needed to do(except the starting thing).
im still thinkin whether i'll be hitting the nationals.. if i do, i'll leave her down there and get my bro to drive it back when its been rewired. i wouldnt mind gettin all the wires underneath the steeringwheel checked too as a few of them have melted.. no idea what they are(were) for.
if its easter sunday..(8th) then thats my b/day.. might have to be home in the grog!
Yes I agree, there is nothing worse than an air cooled mechanic working on a golf
Rednut you really need to find a SAAB or Volvo place that are going to do ttheright thing for you
lol. so the the speedo stopped working again yesty.. looks like i'll have to get a partner for the screw-in bit thats on the cable - on the dash side (if anyone understands that.. kudos ) otherwise it'll just wriggle its way out everytime.
i'm happy to say i can check this on my own this time.
finally got 2 people in the backseat to test the "bottoming out" ...looks like the struts will need to be put in.
once the newy crew have done what they/we can do.. i'll go take it to a "professional".. until then, i/we will continue to do as much as possile to save on fundidge.
car seems to run ok sometimes, but not all the time... and when i say ok, i mean perfect. then it'll jump into 3 cyl and be rough as guts ofcourse, then back to 4 etc.
i suggested to rednut that it could be an intermittent ignition problem, hence maybe one plug/lead/point is not quite right. we can check the points and plugs but loon, how old are the leads on the jetta?
its not just when the car is cold either.... its when its warm aswell. personally i dont see any cold start issues - that toggle switch seems to work ok to give it extra fuel, the car seriously drops in revs if you give it the switch when its warmed up so yeah.
anyway, the long and the short is, that when the car is running "badly" its running on 3 cyl. otherwise the engine seems to be fine.
Durie is a great guy, he just doesnt have the time of day for watercoolers.... each to his own. I get good parts prices from him so im happy.

The three cylinder thing sounds like leads or plugs. Dunno how old they are? are they black german ones with metal sleeves over the plugs?
Could it be a sticky injector??

heres a new one..the only thing i can think of.. is the fuel tank is on an angle..
if i have less than 1/4 of a tank of fuel.. and turn right.. after the corner, i loose all acceleration as if the car is gonna stall (going about 20k's) for a second or two.. has never happened turning left?!
any ideas other than "keep the tank above 1/4 a tank" and "only make left turns"
ayden: what are those tyres you got? im gonna get a pair or 2 pair if its cheaper from ben.. i have nonety traction in the wet..
i got my tax back too!! might wait a few weeks until rego is due before doing anything to the car as the rust on the back is a concern..
