Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk2 GTi

Best golf ever made was without doubt the Mk2 Gti. Having previously owned a hot Mk1, which was a great little car I still have to say the Mk2 is even better. The Mk2 was more civilised and looked more purposeful. Fitted with a few extra creature comforts, better seats, appearance and cosmetics it will always remain the ultimate collectable Golf in my opinion. I was restoring a 'dream' Mk2 GTi for a friend but as the cash has run out the car has got to go. If you would like to see photos of this near complete resto, with some great extras, then go to page 3 of the classifieds to view what would be arguably the best value MK2 GTi available.

        arguably being the salient word...

People like different cars for different reasons the mark2 is heavier, slower and doesn't handle as well as a mk1 one. Mk1 is a true drivers cars. MK2 is for the well, the more reserved type of driver who rates creature comforts higher than driveability !
        1993 MK1 CAB ! Work in Progress........

                LMAO

You are WRONG, straight up. A2 chassi is teh ownz, thats a fact, A2 > A1. Have you ever raced a mk2 16v or mk2 g60 against a mk1 gti, whos slower?
The only difference is power steering in regards to creature comforts and that only came on late mk2s. Everything else was an option that could have came out on the mk1 if it was avaliable for production at the time. If you realy look at it an mk2 is just an mk1 with a better chassi and more options.
Mk3 and 4 is where they started leaning more towards creature comforts.

Kjet Mk2 is one of the best driving cars of its era, bar none.
The digipants downtuned aussie ones are lardy and slow which is where they get this rep from in Oz.
I have owned lots of both and would drive 1000ks in a Mk2 much more readily than in a Mk1.
Best answer really is a Scirocco.

The ONLY way a mk2 can be considered refined is to get out of a 30yr old mk1...
