Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Earth Points

    Yo.

My MK2 has a new ISV and MAF and now idles like it should!

That said sometimes it still misbehaves and you can set it right by running the air conditioning.

I just thought it was the added load on the engine that did it but a friend suggested it may have a dodgy earth.

If so where do I check the earth points?

I know there are the wires which connect to the rocker cover but are there any others?

    Anyone else had this issue?

    Cheers

There will be an earth that runs to the block, head and possibley gear box ( i have on mine but not sure if that was stock) there is also a main fuse box earth and other assiocated earths all crimped togther going into the earth terminal i assume.

Also one up in the raintray to earth the ecu. That one is important and can be redone to good effect.

i've been meaning to redo some of my earths. what gauge cable should i use?

the MFA oil temp reading jumps around when the electrics are switched on and off, thinking it's the ecu or fuse box earth.

        edit: just found this

          Cheers for the diagram!

Yeah I must admit the headunit sometimes just turns off and the tacho will bouce up high when you turn the car on or off.

So I got laughed at when I asked for the earth points to be checked my Auto Electrician. Not sure if I will go back.

Anyway it now idles worse. The old italian bloke said he "adjusted it a little bit"

Does anyone know if the ECU sends a higher idle signal to the motor when the A/C is on to account for the extra load?
