  • Dan's Golf GTI Work

    Hey all

Since I've been talking about my Golf mk2 gti alot, I thought it might be a good idea to follow the steps I take to get her back to her former glory, and get advise on any maintenance that I need.

It's a 91 aus spec mk2 Golf GTI with a 2E 2L mk3 gti engine which was converted by previous owner, Scotsman. He also dropped her on coilovers (very stiff going down the hume), put on a custom exhaust (sounds swaw-eet), and swapped and changed lights to smoked.

First thing I've done is ordered original lights as I liked the stock look and so that is what I'm trying to achieve. This included changing over the rear lights, front indicator lights, and fixing the side lights as one was stuck on by gaff tape (not a good look).

Here are a few pictures of what she looked like when I got her:

A list of all that needs looking at and to be changed or fixed (any hints on where to go would be tops):
    • Rear Tailgate Light (Not working/how is it wired) - DONE
    • Re-do, organise wiring (speakers, dash, lights)
    • Read about water issues on earlier thead? - want to get to the bottom of it
    • Check Bumper mounts - Why is it cable tied? - DONE
    • Check/adjust suspension - DONE
    • Service Manual - DONE
    • Warning Lights where tom tom cord comes thru (change or customise) - DONE
    • Door handles and lock (some loose, others tight) - - DONE STILL NEED TO BE CHANGE OVER
    • Check for rust - DONE
    • Check for dings - ONE BEHIND GRILL AND BUMPER
    • Fix/Glue pedal pads
    • Organise cables
    • Change/Fix Rev counter
    • Cracked Dash - need new one or fix old one
    • Redo Seats where they have ripped
    • Change Rear lights - DONE
    • Sunshade mounts broken - need new ones
    • New parcel shelf
    • Blacken bumpers or new ones (which is impossible but im optimistic) - DONE GOT SOME SMALL BUMPERS
    • Respray arches or new ones - DONE
    • Check and change broken door floor and window seals
    • Floor carpet
    • Boot Upholstry (some missing)
    • Roof Upholstry ripped in some spots
    • Respray car - colour stone chipped and faded
    • Straighten front end from ding
    • Respray grill
    • Free up steering wheel - DONE
    • Get BBS Rims
    • Check and fix side skirts - otherwise leave off
    • Put fog lights in - DONE
    • Blacken wheels - DONE
    • Change front indicators to orange - DONE
    • Change door handles to chrome
    • Change and mount side lights - DONE
    • New gear stick and H/B boot
    • Change gear knob to stock - DONE

I'll add to the list as I notice more stuff to fix.

    Cheers

I've also purchased new plates as well:

      GTI 291

It speaks for itself. It will be the thin euro black plate with white characters to fit in with the black bumpers.

In a previous post I mentioned about my ordeal with the arches and side skirt, being that the one skirt is shorter then the other, and missing the jack flaps, and im missing bits of the side trim.

I went up to Camden GTI and settle on the earlier golf thin arches but they have the thicker door trim. Im wondering whether to continue with the thinner arches and find the thicker door trim somewhere, or should I try and find orignal arches and side skirts.

Matt and Camden GTI has a set but said they are hard to keep on, so I'm thinking of either having no side skirts or just spraying it black.

        Any tips would be great.

I also pulled off the front bumper to see how to mount it more securely to find that she has had a small ding (the same as in my mk1 golf, what are the odds).

This dosen't effect appearance as grill and front bumper plastic cover. But while driving the other day, the plastic bit dropped of the bumper due to the indicator popping out. Is there any way to better secure the bumper as I dont like the front scrapping along the ground.

You can see the ding in the pillar that goes from the top-middle of the grill to where the bumper beam sits that supports the black and red bit, right in the middle of it. Is it worth fixing?

            Nice work Dan!

Im trying to figure out what I do with my trim as well.

I need a new front bumper, side skirts are probably OK but would love a new set. Could always ship some stuff over from GSF or even TMTuning, split the shipping cost!

Im starting to think I need to source a parts car for my MkII!!!!
1986 MkII Golf GTI 16V (Sold), 2005 MkV Golf GTI (Sold), 2007 Polo GTI (Sold), 2011 Polo 66TDI (Selling), 2012 Passat 125 TDI Bluemotion, 2013 Scirocco R (Due October!)

Look like a good project, I miss my RedMk2Gti
I don't think you can fix the ding by yourself, seeing your long list of to-do, I suppose you have unlimited budget so you can get professional repairer to fix it properly. Good luck
btw, if you come to the stage to fix the dashboard, I have a spare perfect one. Let me know if you're interested.

Yeh that uncracked dash board sounds good, and I actually don't have an unlimited budget (wish I did), I just like to dream big. Also the sale of my 76 mk1 golf will go to funds for this car. Hoping to make her a little more mint.

GAP is one of the best oversea parts suppliers, now its' even better cos they used to have minimum oversea order of US$100. Be careful about door lock, US spec car may be diff from ours.

Shipping cost for bumper is killing though.

They look a little strange (should be wider at the back not the front) with G60's on the front and standards on the rear, I toyed with the idea myself and then saw a pic of one.

Problem is with 5drs you cant fit G60 rear arches without panel mods.

Yeh I'll think Ill stick with the pre 89 arches and find the thicker side door trim. I've seen the 3 door ones on ebay UK but I'll have to badger the seller for aus shipping. then i'll make an alteration for a 5 door.

Also I've got some smoked lights (indicator and rear lights) and a complete original set of arches and side skirt (one shorter then the other) if anybody is after them. Also save that dash Redmk2gti, I'll have it. Cracks in mine are HUGE!!!
