  • just a few quick Q's about my mk2.

    hey there everyone!

i haqve a few questions about my mk 2 and i rekon heres the best place to ask...

i have had some trouble with my thermofan siezing, so i replaced it with a porsche 996 unit we had spare at work, and it worked great for about a day. now it is siezed aswell.

has this happened to anyone else?

it happened in winter, so i didnt really stress - warning light never came up, just drove around looking all cool in my mk 2

then a few weeks back my thermostat housing cracked, and was leaking coolant. just topped it up here and there as it was only a tiny leak.

last week it pretty much gave up, and i have replaced it - and everything is all good again - besides no thermofan.

    so the questions are:

what is the normal operating temp for a mk2? when i look on my trip computer? - i want to kn ow when im running too hot.

    does anyone run aftermarket fans?

when i buy my aftermarket fan (or maybe another porsche or bmw one from work) how do i wire it up with a switch in the cabin? do i need a relay? etc?

i want to avoid using the current circut, as i dont know why the fans are blowing - may be the circut, may be somthing else

    thanks in advance guys

The cut in temp may be written on the switch. Should be a two speed.
Just get a new Golf 2 fan and it will last for years.

The trip computer temp is the oil temp not water. Anything up to 110 degrees would be normal on the road.

The temps the switches operate at are on the body. Usually on at 105 I think and off at 95???

Should be no need to have a switch inside unless you are doing some track work and want to deliberately start the cooling early.

There are single and dual speed fans on MK2s. Single speed has 2 wires dual speed has 3 wires.

When you say the fan seizes do you mean the motor gets locked up? Is it still locked up after you remove it from the car? If the fan motor siezes and you replace it and that motor seizes too then I would think the cause is unlikely to be electrical. Even with dead windings a motor ought to turn. If there's a crook bearing you'd hear that before it failed too. I'd be wondering if there is a mechanical problem like a damaged fan cowling or something that impedes the fan from functioning. But probably a good idea too to check you have the right fuse on the fan.

If the fan spins ok but the problem is that it just doesn't come on when the motor gets hot then the first place to look is the electrical connection on the fan switch on the lower near side of the radiator. Stuff drips on the connector.
But is it possible the motor isn't getting hot enough? In my car the fan only comes on under extreme conditions. The best test is to let it idle with the aircon running. Should come on then.

fan comes on with the aircon anyway.

does anyones fan come on much? i replaced my thermoswitch a couple months ago and ive never heard the fan come on (only comes on with the a/c).

is the fan meant to blow air onto the radiator, or blow air away from the radiator (and towards the motor)???

                  Towards the motor.
Always worth checking if you have butchered wiring.(Standard equipment on S/H Golfs)

ill be picking up a second hand thermofan from a T3 tomorrow - its a 2 speed so the 3 wires,as T3's run aircon. dont know if it'll connect straight up or not, hope it does...

Get the thermo switch as well

                        It should just plug in.

                            On the radiator.
If it is original, it will be a 2 speed the same as the T3.
