  • MKII she not a starting!! Help!!

    - Starter motor turns over as per normal
    -Ignition lights working as normal
    - No sound of rear fuel pump kicking in.

I checked leads, plugs, all seemed ok.

I called the RACQ guy (came in 10 minutes amazingly!!), he checked everything. he suspected that it is ignition related.

HE "bridged the gap in one of the spark plugs" and she started first click.

Cut to last night again same problem. I switched the ignition key on and off a few times and she started, no worries.

    Again this morning- no start.

Anyone have any ideas what it is?

Is there a faulty switch somewhere?

HELP!! i have to go to work this afternoon!! any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Did you see what he did when he "bridged the gap between the spark plugs"?

Sometimes spark plugs have little metal screw on caps that help the spark lead connect to the plug properly. They could be missing or dud?

Or a further choice could be dead plugs or leads?

Ive checked leads and plugs and they both seem fine.

Plugs are due for change, but that would not explain why the Fuel pump is not kicking in.

Leads are only 20,000 kms old.

Im still thinking its a switch somewhere, as Im not getting the pre start Fuel pump whirring noise from the fuel tank.

      Could it be the pump?

Well if you can't hear it then I would imagine so.

Thanks Benough, thats a great link.

I might go do a test on the pump circuit to see if there is a fault somewhere there.

          Many thanks

Pump circuit test looks a bit out of my ability today ( i dont have any test gear here)

So i might have to get the car to an Auto Electrician.

I managed to get the car to start again, the fuel pump is kicking on, so it must be intermittent.

Just hope it gets me to work and back today!!

Switching off and on again to start sounds like you are losing holding pressure. If the pump runs and starts after a few primes then i would suspect a fuel pump no return valve. Very common

Ran fine this afternoon to work and back (touch wood).

I thought it may have been something to do with the pump.

Should i just replace the pump or is the valve separate?

If it happens again, give your fuel relay a tap and listen if it clicks. Contacts could be sticky, or wiring behind not making good contact to the coil of the fuel relay.

It comes with the pump but look around mate some people on here may have one , try Golf Loon he might. I have used all of what i had sorry. I woule be tempted to get someone to check the pressures 1st before you waste any money mate. Have it diagnosed before you splash on a pump , they dont come cheap.
                      Cheers

Thanks for your advice JMac, Ill take her down to the local VW dealer to have the pump checked.

It must be intermittent because she ran all day without fault yesterday.

Many thanks for the tips all!
