      hmmmm, good question.
now im a mechanic but i never ever thought to pay attention to gearboxes. guess now comes as a problem.
well all i know is my clutch is slipping so i need new one. dont know if its pressure plate or not.
all i know is i can get a whole clutch plate n disc or what you may call it.
      dont know words in english.
      for around 100 bucks.
so im guessing would be bit more expensive so i say 150.
      its random slippage.
1st gear no slippage none in 2nd either but 3-4-5th gear it just slips when i accelerate.
so any help would be nice.
ill find out 2mo what i need exactly

odd, machine your flywheel so that its level and stops slipping, you might find your disc is worn or your pressure plate is f'd take the clutch out mate and have a look,

its a good idea to replace the release bearing and some seals at the same time.

if you have never seen a mk2 clutch they are opposite to most cars aka, it doesn't go flywheel - disc - p.plate. the mk2's go pressure plate, disc, flywheel,
        replace the bolts too.

Dont machine the flywheel as it will then slip for sure.
You need a full clutch kit. $300 brand new.

Just remember you have a back to front clutch set up there, if the flywheel is scorched then you will need to find someone with a jig who can reface or you will need a new one or a good second handie. If it has only just started slipping then try and limit it mate till you do the job. There is a few other things to consider while you are in there. Condition of the release plate, rod and of course the rear main oil seal, now would be the sensible time to chage that.

While on this subject, I just pulled the box from my Toledo. Don't be surprised Matt, I said I was doing it this weekend.

Anyway, I have a flywheel, plate and cover that aren't in bad condition. If you want them. You can have them for $25 plus postage. Need to check the number of splines on the disc.

Not to say Jimmy isn't right about the RMS but the only time a did a precautionary one. I damaged it and it dumped oil on the new clutch. So, in my world where I don't lose sleep having to do things twice, if it is dry, then leave it be!

                Cheers

I am suprised Gav, good work tho.

Thats a very cheap price for a clutch mate, getin there for the budget option. It wouldn`t have done many ks that unit.

Hate to throw it away if it's useful to someone. That's the Yorkshire in me!!

Pretty much sorted the Toledo. Need to hunt down some starter motor bolts, got the Audi ones somewhere I reckon. Fit the clutch cable and bolt up the driveshafts. The inner CVs had about half a pint of gearbox oil in them !

Fair comment about the RMS Gav, i look at it like that for many things but would be gutted having to do it again in 3 months time though. Having said that would be equally gutted having to do it again along with a new plate, after it got contaminated with the Texas Tea. Swings and roundabouts. If it isnt broken dont fix it is very commonly brought into play
Tricky too when we talk about preventative maintenance funny old thing

I was spewing cos it did the dump while I was on the A303 going to Dover to catch a ferry for France and the RAF Ski Champs.

Had Debbie on board and everything, floored it off the roundabout by the Haynes Museum. Honest I nearly threw up. I nursed it all the way to Dover and called the RAC. They wanted me to have VW sort it in the morning, I said I couldn't wait and the got me a hire car for 2 weeks.

Bonus you are thinking, no it was a Rover 214...... No CD player.

The only tape we had was the one that came with the snow chains. It explained how to fit them, in FRENCH!

The RAC paid a local garage to redo the clutch and RMS while we were away rather than tow it back to Cornwall. Now that was the Bonus bit

Just back to flywheel machining, i have machined a few mk1 mk2 flywheels lightening them and it is posible but you need to machine the same amount off the mounting position for the pressure plate as off the face for the clutch disk to keep the correct pressure when assembled. This way keeps the faces concentric to each other for even pressure aswell.
