Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My new Mk2.

Thanks to Matt, Dad and my gf I got myself another mk2, one that isnt smashed. The first thing i did was cut myself on the gear nob, off to a good start i think.

I got it for a fair price, the same price i paid for the red one and funnily enough it is in about the same condition as when i got the red one.

Here are a couple of pics I snaped today before i got stuck in to it.

It looks alot worse in person haha. It very very dirty in side and out but it goes prity hard.

I got it with a 2L bottom end, rebuilt box and vr6 brakes. I have also been told it has uprated sway bars and shocks but i have to double check these things. Its prity amazing to drive compared to the red one, ALOT more power.

    So far i have:
-changed the mirrors with working ones
-fixed the passanger side central locking
    -fixed the shift linkages
    -fixed the horn
-re-atached the bumper and spoiler (still needs work)
    -changed the vacume lines
-changed the ISV (but the idel is still crap)
-changed some of the cooling pipes
-swaped the air box out (too many holes)
    -changed the wipers
-re atached some bits and bobs

Things that need doing off the top of my head:
    -front engine mount
    -at least 2 new tires
    -timing
-the rear end needs to be redone, the hatch isnt painted on the inside and has been badly repaired
-the car steers by itself sometimes when your on the gas
    -brakes need bleeding
    -new head lights and grill
    -idel issue
    -crack in the windscreen
    -cosmetic stuff

Im sure the list will get bigger once i book it in for a road worthy check.

The mods that will be done:
    -ss exhaust including downpipe
    -sterio (can you say 140db)
-interior will have some minor work done
    -coiloveries
    -electric windows
    -alarm
    etc..

.....and ive lost my train of though

I will keep this page updated as i go along, hopefully it will turn out a bit better than my red one.

    *EDIT*
    Things to do for RWC:

    - windscreen
    - wipers DONE
    - parkers are blue DONE
    - dash lights all need to work
    - front grill needs to be secure DONE
    - no number plate globes
    - secure and mount radiator DONE
    - no timing belt cover DONE
    - front shocks
    - exhaust mounts DONE
    - rear wheel bearings
    - secure wires under front bar
    - passenger side seat is loose DONE
    - wash motor and repair oil leaks
    - p/s drive shaft boot
    - drive shaft seals
    - p/s lower side skirt trim
    - refit fog light DONE
    - 2 new tyres DONE
    - front rotors
    - rear rotors
    - p/s tie rod end boot
    - possible water leak
    - front engine mount DONE

Excellent work there mate, good to see you've gotten stuck into it after your unfortunate incident. Silver is also a good colour for MK2's methinks

Yeah it was Brians many moons ago.
He did the 5 stud, dunno how as its still Mk2 subframe and not widetrack.

It also used to belong to Beau the crazy yank more recently.

Dunno about the swaybars, they look stock, but it definately has koni inserts in the front and koni yellos on the back.

It has a Mk3 manifold, downpipe and Cat.

Its probably just the stock 1.8 cam, but thats ok, with a 1.8 head on a 2E bottom end. Its a hydraulic head, you could stick any cam in it. I`d get it running right first tho.

Tuning wise, i reckon set the dissy timing so it doesnt ping. Why did you change the ISV? It hunted for a minute when cold like they all do then ran ok.

Did you get the spoiler, that was totally attached when it got dropped off at the freight depot?

Is the interior the same as the Red one? I`d have to sort the drivers seat.

Glad it goes hard and you are happy, will be a sweet Mk2 if you can make it look as good as the red one and at least you have untold spares

The red one is going to be used for parts, whatever i don't need will be sold or kept or thrown away.

So its not vr6 brakes? Ill have a closer look tomorrow.

I changed the ISV becuase i thought that was the problem. It had the same problem as the red one when the ISV was dirty. You would rev it and the revs would sink then go back up, but thats not the only idle problem. I knew my one worked and was clean, so just to be sure basicly.

The spoiler and the side skirt where IN the car not ON it when i picked it up.

Its no the same interior as the red one, different color. The door cards are going to be done is suede and ill do the seats later in something else.

At the moment im just looking to get it running properly, road worthy and registered. The rest can wait.

Its VR6 Disks and Calipers, but not VR6 Hubs. I never had a close look at the setup, but the pads and disks would be vr6 spec 280mm.

Just for future refrence, that means i need mk2 wheel bearings correct?

I somehow missed your crash thread, had no idea the red one was dead. Good to see you've got straight back on the horse. New one sounds like it's got a lot of potential.
