  • Interest in imported North American spec mk2 GTI and Jetta Coupe?

I am curious to know what sort of market there is for North American spec mk2s down here. Iam visiting from Canada right now and i have noticed a serious lack of old dubs in Australia.
I have access to alot of good condition VWs in Canada that I am thinking you guys would love to get your hands on.
I have also noticed that most vehicles down here are all 4 doors. Would a 2 door Golf/GTi and 2 door Jetta be something that would appeal to alot of people? How about Corrados and Sciroccos? they are all plentiful on the West Coast

What are the legalities when importing older cars and LHD cars? can anyone give me some basics?

I am curious to know what you all think as I am contemplating setting up a few containers of cars.

    Cheers

everybody wants a 3dr mk2 here but no-one is willing to dish out the money for them. unfortunately VW's of any kind are a bit of a niche market down here, especially older dubs, especially mk2's.

just keep in mind that only cars pre 1989 can be imported. nothing 1989 or later.

basically, get a large deposit from any interested parties before you start wasting any time on it.

sorry to poo-poo your idea, just want to save you wasted hassle

PS can we hear more about your cars in your sig

LHD is a no go unless they are converted to RHD, which can cost a bit.

Regardless to that, you would only be allowed one car per year, and as Mischa said, nothing past 1/1/89 can be imported unless you've owned it and been in the country with the car for a minimum of 12 months.

Please have a search on here to find out more, the subject is always popping up.

Legalities aside I'd give my left nut for a mk2 jetta coupe.

Thanks, i did some quick searching in this forum and i got the jist of rules like the pre '89 and rhd stuff.
But iam still curious is you can bring a LHD car in and register it for limited use. Like say using it on weekends for pleasure that sort of thing. I know this is possible in Canada as we have a ton of RHD jap imports now (i know thats a bad comparison). Does any one have a good link to some Aus Government websites that would have more info on this?

Whats the deal with all the other importers, eg. Jap and American cars that are well past 1989?

they get in under the SEVS (special enthusiast vehicle scheme). they're cars that were never sold here. they have to go through an inspection process as a one off and then all cars of that model can be imported without restriction. according to mr.matt it costs about 10k to get a workshop licensed for doing the inspections. corrados are eligible under the scheme but unfortunately nobody has forked out the money to have one inspected.

What about other cars? Would a 2door 16v be eligible or not because a 8v 4door version was sold here and mk3 GTI's etc.

So lets say if i fork out 10k to get the license and get the car inspected does that mean anyone can import corrados with whatever engine or year? What if you want to import modified cars under this scheme?

as far as i can remember yes if you pay the money and have a car ready to sacrifice if need be for the inspection then anyone forever more can import corrados without restriction. and i think modified cars are fine but again its been at least a year since i investigated the ins and outs.

no golfs are eligible because they were sold here and a 2dr 16v is not different enough to a 5dr 8v aussie delivered as far as the gov't is concerned. unenlightened pricks

Why don't we (petrol heads for everywhere) do something to change the rules. Like the hippies and old people do.

Aint that the truth... Never mind. I am glad I still have my 85...

I love the Jetta Coupe. I had an 87 Jetta 4 door which was cool. It got rear ended savagely.
                              Euro look 2... Mk2 love!
