  • Golf Noob looking to buy and learn!

    Hey guys,

i have been reading your forums for a while now, and i found them very useful and the people seem nice. i have been doing so as i am looking at buying a car!

I am about to take my test and get my liscence.

    My interests lie in possibly:

    *Golfs (or golves...lol)
    *s13 Silvias
    *and maybe nissan NX-r

but recently after quiting my job my budget has become very limited and i am now leaning towards a golf (prob mkii gti).

I know almost nothin about cars but i am willing to learn. Unfortunatly my family does not own an manual and i have never driven one so i have been further limited to an auto ( ). I think that leaves me with '91-'92

I would like to keep my car very stock to avoid higher insurance and i need your help guys! I am open to any advice or recommendations you guys can offer.

    Thx heaps,
    The putter

i think you should get some driving lessons and get your manual licence. you might find it difficult to drive at first, but you'll quickly get the hang of it. after a week of driving on your p's you'll be fine.

you might have trouble finding an auto mk2 gti as i dont think theres many around.

        Go for the Golf!

Well...firstly the S13s are kinda sluggish on the non-blown engines, and with an auto. Secondly many of them having crappy paint jobs, dents, crappy parts, depends on how much cash u got, and finally I reckon insurance rating will be higher as on NX-R as well. BTW I was looking for a Toyota SERA before my Golf, but heard parts are pretty ex for that... think seriously!! GOLF!! haha

        Cheers

thx for the post, only prob for me is price and, dependin on whether i get lessons for man. or not, the auto issue. I do love the look of the golf and ive been in a few diff ones and they seem to all drive very smoothly. they are alot cheaper aswell and prob use less petrol so i think its def. a good option.

How rare are the autos, are they good or do they have an issues?

i have also been lookin at the mkI's, being cheaper and i feel looking retro, but im guessin that autos would b a similar prob.

Thx for the posts and keep em comin

SOHC is correct, NA s13's are sluggish as hell, espesically autos. And a turbo would probably be out of the picture if your worried about insurance. If your wanting a golf (espescially Mk1 or 2) youll want to learn how to drive a manual! I cant imagine driving an auto Mk1, haha. As for Nx-r's i think there slightly queer, hairdressers car.

Spoken to mum...she says i would be wastin my time on lessons if you can drive a manual on ur green p's anyway. I may have to wait, but ownin your own car means a bit more independance. so that means auto or wait i think.

whaddya rekkn, if i wait i will prob b drivin mums 05 impreza gx - very smooth ride but very sluggish aswell (can only compare to dads 04 VYII clubsport...lol).

i say drive your parents cars mate until you hit your 'green' P's. buy the car on your first p's and do it up until you hit you greens by that time youll have a sweeet car

Get manual for sure if at all possible... its soooo worth it

i will probs grab a car (A2 GTi?) thats in as original condition as possible, fix it up to original cond and throw in a sound system, but i had this crazy idea that might just work. My main hobby is playing guitar and i was hoping there would be someway to set up a guitar amp in the boot of my car (in a kinda pimp my ride way) so i can shred in the school carpark and crank it up to piss off all the teachers.

i know almost nothin about the anatomy of cars, let alone repair and restoration, although with some help from friends and all the great posts on these forums i should be able to learn and figure it out.

                          keep em comin...

Go the golf!!! trust me, ive had over 30 cars, skylines, GTi-R pulsars, Escorts,
RX3s, blah blah blah....But the golf has a personality and stands out in a world of blinged out tupperware mobiles that have ruined it for most Jap car lovers...still love my Jappers, but ive always loved VWz..the MK2 is only my second VW, and i want more now..hahaha.
A neat VW will turn more heads than any rice mobile, and latley for some reason Girls have been commenting on mine.....albeit saying its Cute tho. haha bahhhh, ill shut up now
                              Cheers, Benny
