  • Aftermarket and lightweight panels for the mk1

just wondering if theres any places in australia selling aftermarket replacement panels for the MK1 for rust repair or light weight replacement parts like fiberglass or carbon fiber.

seen a few on ebay, door cards, bonnets, chin lip in cabon but not much in australia just yet.

    thanks.

I doubt there will ever been much in Oz. not a big enough market for mk 1's here.

Plenty on ebay and overseas, Euro, UK, US all seem to have various shops etc who sell both parts. You can even get genuine new parts from VW still.

i was thinking that but it was worth a try in asking.

shipping allover the world has gone up recently so i was hoping that i might be able to pick some parts up in Oz to save on huge shipping costs.

would love a light weight tail gate/hatch and bonnet.

You could always whip something up out of fiberglass yourself..?? It's an idea.

As for rust panels parts, theres always a few mk 1s that are being wrecked that you can scavange parts off, or just repair using sheet metal. (providing you are handy with a welder..)

I recently got a carbon duck bill from united kingdom cost me more in shipping than the cost of the part but if you want to play you have to pay
There are companies out there that will make 1 off light weight parts just have to suss it out in you area, theres other areas in a mk1 that can be lighten or reduced before looking at light weight panels.

yeah, ive seen one of thoes on ebay... 90 for lip and 55 delivered to aus.

well i was thinking of doing along these lines but with thing fiberglass panels to hide the mods to the car from Mr. popo. altho maybe not gutting the door like that :S

what other mods could be done? remove ac, sound deading?

my car will have a pair of light weight aftermarket seats as well

If I remember rightly, that super-lightened red mk1 died a nasty death! Sometimes you can take out too much material. I assume you have removed all the underbody sealant and sound deadening already

why lighten a mk1 even more? they only weigh as much as a feather...just get more stigs under your bonnet

the plan is to be light weight enough to not need more "stigs under your bonnet" so to speak

and i think ive seen pic's of that red one after its crash, altho it might be another red one im thinking of... the driver suvired?

ahh thats the one i was thinking of... he had some bad luck with the crash, but he can always use it as a ratgolf now

a mk1 carbo bonnet is alittle out of my price range atm

They're not even full carbon, otherwise I'd have grabbed one yonks ago (and painted it, though!).
