  • brake light always on

    Hey guys,

I've noticed that my in dash brake light (the light above the park brake) is always on.
Im pretty sure its something to do with the brake master cylinder, but wasn't 100% sure.

    Is this what it is?
    Does it need replacement?
    Whats involved? DIY?

    Thanks in advance

I'd be looking at your brake pressure switches on the master cyl. Try bridging out the lead's & see if the light goes off.

You may also have a leak somewhere which is normally haapen's when the light comes on.

Check all the brake hoses, fitting's & connections.

I had the same problem. Traced it to a bad earth on the battery. I added another earth cable direct to the gearbox mount - easy to do and improves the performance of the battery.

My Mk1 is a diesel and it is common to upgrade the earth to improve starting. I read about it on here somewhere. I also read (in the Bentley manual I think) that a dodgy earth can cause the brake light to stay on.

It is designed to light up to show a fault when you are actually using the brakes. That is, it should only light up intermittently to show a problem.
