How do people take there mk1 motors out? top or bottom?
Always out the bottom with them here. The very first one that we did in the late 70s was an auto and we went out the top. it was a hassle. @ jacks and out these days. Easy!!!
Andrew
OK, now how complete is the motor and where is everything disconnected for fastest removal?
Exhaust off from head, manifold (if you're not running extractors) or first join?
Inlet manifold on or off?
Carb on or off?
Drop complete with gearbox?
What's your prefered technique for dragging the motor out from under the car?
Tip it over and drag it out, scratching it and the concrete?
Use a piece of carpet to drag it out
Lift the car so high that you can wheel it out on the jack
You have your own 2 post hoist and don't understand what all the fuss is about?
Etc
For me, the last one I did from above, all manifolds off, gearbox still in car! ( The hardest way possible!) Next time I'll go out the underside with the box attached.
I pulled off the extractors and the inlet manifold and dragged it out the bottom on a piece of plywood. Couldn't quite get the car high enough so we had to lay it right down to get it out, but it was fairly easy.

wow i must have done it terribly wrong the first time i did it...manifold on...gear box on...through the top :O and then trying to get those extractors on was a b1tch!
ok so the bottom is the way to go...after taking off all the extra crap from the top.
the last motor i did i undid everything from on top then dropped the motor onto carpet then lifted the car...with the engy crane :S it worked ok ten pulled the motor out...that worked a treat...
but what will i do when my engine bay is all shiney and freshly painted and i'm putting in my nicely new painted block back in?

..
Thats pretty much what I did. (well you've all seen the pics...)
Well actually, I droppped it from below, and dragged it out, but went back in over the top, with the block+head in both cases, no box manifolds etc.
I didn't have the torx bit otherwise I would have ust taken the box off.
Disconnect battery neg. & remove positive lead from starter along with starter motor wiring & starter & also removing starter motor along with the front engine mount, disconnect alt. wiring, unbolt the exhaust at the bottom flange, remove the driveshaft's complete (aid's in getting exhaust manifold out), undo the geabox shift linkages (only two of them), speedo drive, clutch cable, reverse light switch, ign. coil lead, dizzy neg. wire, fuel supply & return hoses, air inlet pipe, coolant heater hoses, top & bottm rad. hoses, rear tran's mount & left & right engine/trans mount's
Lower engine onto a skate board with a bit of maneuvering & bob's your uncle.
