2.0 requires more work. from memory you have to upgrade the fuel pump to and electric one, and there's something else too (but i've forgotten atm)

I'm not sure of the NSW rules, but in Vic, you need an Engineers cert for any engine greater than 300cc (.3L) bigger than standard, which means 1.8 will go in no worries, and Vicroads (RTA) won't have any issues. 2.0 may require a cert, depending how tight they are, cause although the GTI's came with 1.8s, and the chassis can handle a 2.0 (because of the previous thingy) they may not like it as much, and want a eng cert for it, which could be a PITA, and in the end not really worth it for 200cc.

but yea, you ge the jist of what i'm saying? I'm sure someone else will chime in with a more specific answeer...

i'm not even sure of the power differences between a 2.0 and 1.8 - anyone?

    EDIT:
all depends on how much you wanna spend; and what performance you want. a proper tuned GC 1.8, with big carb, exhaust and mild cam, will scare quite a few things on the street, and beat a fair few things - just off the line, not to mention the corners... pretty basic setup, with nothing that is too fancy really, but it'll work. sometimes simple is best!
cool thanks i will investigate further

does anyone know where to get seals? age old question i know but id really like a fresh new set. found a place selling window, hatch and rear side window seals brand new and genuine for 175US... am i likely to find a better deal than that?

they was a mob selling them in aus on ebay for about 100 bucks a piece, but they weren't geuine or oem, so the fit mightn't have been great.

ask on the forum too, poeple sometimes have spares. like me. but you can't have mine

            Excellent find!
In stock form about 25hp at the crank between the 1.8CL motor and the 2.0L GL spec 115hp vs 90hp! Not to mention the 30+nms of torque. The MK3 2.0L is great, just not in a mk3
And as you said before with a nice cam 270+ and a head port and deck your looking at closer to 140hp...

I'm really starting to get jealous of some of you people with your project cars, I wish I had some space and mechanical know how...

all it takes is a good set of sockets, ratchets, spanners and some workshop manuals and you'll be set

vw's are great cars to learn on. i swear you can bolt and unbolt a whole mk2 with just two size spanners.

Actually, most VW's use a 10mm, 13mm, and 17mm for just about everything.

                  hahaha. i spose you're a mk1 kinda guy. for mk2 add 19 and 21mm and you're actually set...

i cant wait to start working on this. are there any/many issues with converting a 2l 8v (that i'd assume would run on digi) to carbie? space in mk1 bay...?

well its home safe and sound. stuck the snowflakes on there temporarily

quick question: will an abf bolt up to the mk1 subframe (just phsically)? can anyone give any good general advice on things to look out for if going down this path...?

i'm starting to really like this cute little car hehe.

few pictures for the picture whores

Lovely. That really is quite straight. well from the pics anyway. Good pickup again.

ABF is the best of the 16Vs I believe. most power from factory, and the best sounding

Easier to put in a 9a if you want a 2l and run it with kr cams, ABF is a long block and is a pain to get in a mk1 as the stock manifold will hit the bonnet.

Looks like a nice straight unit, very similar to mine
