  • Mk 1 engine

    Hi Volks,
A little while ago (2yrs), I bought a Mk1 Golf and let the registration run-out (long story! ). Anyway, I'd like to re-register it now and when I made inquiries, I found out that its engine wasn't what the rego dept expected (VIC). It has a SEAT 1.8 in it (it's nice and quick though!).

Now you and I know that SEAT is Spanish for VW (okay, okay, it's not, but you know what I mean), so the engine probably fitted sweet as a nut (they pulled the injection and fitted a carby). However, the rego dept started talking about "engineer's certificate, tut, tut"....

I rung up an 'engineer' and bless him; he's booked-out for months, lives a million miles from me (I'm in Geelong), charges like a wounded bull and was generally about as helpful as a bargain-hunter at a New Year's sale.

So I'm thinking I'll put a Mk1 engine back into it and get it registered properly. I figure it'll be cheaper than screwing-around with some officious 'engineer' (apologies to any auto engineers out there who don't fit this generalization, but you know, some guys...).

So, can anyone point me at a mk1 Golf engine (recoed) or engine dealer? I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers,
    Bill

The reason they ask for a engineer's certificate because of the capacity has changed from 1.6l (i assume your car was stock) to a 1.8l its a pain i know considering its basically the same engine but you can still get away without a certificate if you play your cards right

Why do Auto engineers charge a lot?

That's the same answer as the age old question: why do dogs lick their balls?

          Because they can.

I had my mazda engineered a while back here in Sydney, from memory it cost about $250 & the guy came to the car 3 or 4 times checking my progress on mods.

I did ring around to find the best deal I could, a local guy wanted twice the money & wanted me to trailer the R100 to him each time for inspection!

my advice would be to ring around a talk to a few different engineers, the guy I used worked for a bus manufacturing company & did cars as a side thing.

              Mk 1 motor

Go to a different motor registry and play dumb. Make out its a 1.6 golf motor. Change the tappet cover if needed. I did that with my 1.8 and noone batted an eye as it looks the same to the untrained eye.

                Thanks Volks,

Unfortunately, the Rego dept. know the engine has been changed (not by me!) and hasn't been notified and now they want me to get an engineer's certificate. In Victoria (land of the free?), there are REGISTERED engineers who do the work. There were a couple in Geelong, but for some reason, they've been scrubbed and don't exist anymore (so much for 'Motor City'). So I'm stuck with Ballarat or whatever and like I said, they don't know what 'helpful' means.

I know and you know the engines are the same (but different!), the engineers are w*nk**s and can lick their balls, but..... The original question still stands, guys. Can anyone in Victoria help me out with a Mk1 Golf engine? Or even where I can look for one?

                Cheers

surely, if you really want one, someone will give you a 1.6 golf engine... they are basically worthless.

the thing is though (if you dont mind me saying) if you paid yourself $30 an hour to work on your mk1 doing an engine swap, plus all the time you spend arranging to get another mk1 engine, wouldnt it be cheaper, easier and better for all concerned just to get it engineered? even if you really have to ring around, and go a couple of hundred km/s, its going to be better in the long run.

I totally agree dude. Its already in there, just get it engineered. They'll look at it once and sign it off. Its not like you've gone and crammed a turbocharged VR6 on nitrous into a mk1 with GLD brakes...

don't bother swapping engines! alot more hassle than its worth, and you'll always end up with more stuff you have to do!

physically it's the same engine (basically) so eng shld be a breze

Engineering should be a breeze to get through with that conversion. 1800s came in some Mk1 chassis' so there's no doubt it'll be Ok. You might have to up-spec your brakes to match the 1800 MK1s though.

Just as a matter of interest was that engine ever used in a Golf or other Volkswagen? If you can prove that it was it might make things a bit easier.
