  • Speedo Cable Question - for the Brits.

    Hi,
So i've had another wrong part arrive this week. I ordered a new Speedo cable after finding my guage is fine and the geared plastic end looked to be fine also.
I had the cable shipped from England as even with shipping it was a quater of the price i was quoted at my local parts shop.
the guys telling me its definitely the right cable for my car in the UK, but it's screwed fittings on both ends, not the plate that covers the gearbox. can anyone confirm this? I have a 1980 diesel 1500.

    Or does anybody need this?

That is nothing like the one you need mate!!
I guess thats the gamble you pay with sourcing parts from overseas?
Normally a cable sourced locally should cost approximately $45-$55. They come without a gear so you need to swap it and the clip over.
    All the best with it,
    Cheers, Andrew

        Hi,
be careful if you order this part again. The early golf MK1 had a threaded ring for the speedo head and the plastic gear and bracket that bolts to the gearbox. Mine is this style as a 1981 model.
Soon after the changed over to a plastic snap fitting at the speedo head end.
The early cables with the threaded ring at the speedo head end are no longer available from VW and are hard to source aftermarket in the UK.

        Regards

It turns out the cable we have on our mk1's here was used only on the auto's in the UK. The guy has now sent me this. But in the meantime i've sourced and fitted another.

So if anyone wants a speedo cable, it'd be good to make some of those postage costs back.
