Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Ballpark figure assistance please!!

    G'day everyone,

I'm hoping someone might be able to assist me. I've seen a Mk1 for sale and it has some mechanical issues that need to be resolved. There are 2 parts to my post I guess.

    1) Below is details of the Ad and I'm wondering if someone can give me some guidance as to a ballpark figure for market cost to resolve. I know it's a little unspecific but I know there are huge numbers of mechanically minded people on here and I am not one of them. I also appreciate there may well be other issues but I'm looking just for some financial guidance.

1.8L petrol engine and 3 speed automatic transmission

    It starts and drives.
Steering is noisy ( new steering rack comes with it)
    Brake`s are very bad
Needs new blower motor switch ( new one comes with it)
    Soft-top works only manually.
    Air con doesn't work
Does not take much to put it back to the road!
Tyres are very good! Has 16inch alloy wheels
    NO Battery!
Needs good service! ( new air filter comes with it)

    2) Is there someone on here who is a part time handyman / mechanic who is prepared to work on the car over a longer period of time / weekends? I'm not prepared to engage a high street mechanic at this stage due to $$$ available.

Also happy to pay with beer, lots of beer. Enormous amounts of beer in fact.

I'd be grateful for help and assistance and very much appreciate anyone who takes the time to engage in a positive response.

    Cheers

I'm happy to supply the parts if someone can do the mechanics! Happy to watch and learn. I'm so good at holding someone's beer it's not funny

Cheers Eric, I appreciate that very much.

Are you driving the Red MKI cab? Strange I haven't seen it around!!

Do you know your way around the MKI's then?

                Cheers

yeah, it's been around for about 7 months now. it's my son's car, but i have somehow become his chief mechanic, and as he is away for 12 months, it's mine to drive and fix. there is not much to them, so they're fairly easy to navigate around.
have been doing the wynnum rd run to the gateway and back quite often!

it's not as tidy close up, but it is fairly straight. i haven't pulled the carpets yet, but the main rust is in an area unique to cabby's, the rear corners where the roof seals.
if you buy it and want it really low, like this one. you can get cheap coilover kits from the UK from $400/500, but the are ridiculously stiff

I'm not really looking to go low with my next one, happy to keep it reasonably stock.

I had an immaculate white MKI Cab up until about 4 years ago and itching to get another one looking good.

I might pm you to discuss how further you can assist me??

                        Cheers

                              don't be silly.

if you can't work on your own mk1 you really shouldn't have one.

its the harsh but true reality, they're super simple just get balls deep and figure it out
