    Hi my waterpumper friends

    Looking for info on aftermarket cams. What's best for street use etc and best value for money?

    Looking for good high end power and a long top end. Like 7500 - 8000 rpm if possible with stiffer valve springs. Don't want anything too crazy and want the car to idle fairly comfortably.

    Currently thinking about a 276 tt cam, or maybe an autotech 270. Give me your thoughts. TIA

    I am using a Autotech 270 cam in a 2E engine (standard redline of 6500) and can recommend it.
    If you are looking at operating @ 7500-8000 you will be looking at different engine management and more aggressive cams than the two you mentioned.

      The engine is a short stroke 1.6 on dual side draft carbs, hence why I want the top end power.

      Most importantly I want it drivable above all

        Best shot for you would be to go and see Clive Cams. They're old school Camshaft grinders and they're only just in Ferntree Gully. That would probably be the cheapest option and they'll grind one specific to your application.

        Otherwise any thing around the 270° mark would be fine on the street.

        Idle never seems to be a problem, I've got 2 cars with 300°+ cams and they both idle fine, they just don't make much power below 5000 RPM

          Remember to pull big revs its more than just a cam and valve springs.

          Solid lifter, big valves, good injection and exhaust flow and a bottom end that will take those revs.

          I dont think many stock bottom ends will happily rev to 8k.

            Is solid lifter really necessary? Sorry for all the questions. I know my bottom end is forged, but yes it will be entirely stock.

            I'm inexperienced in engine modifications so better to learn from the experts.

            I'm really not interested in a complete engine build, just a little bit of fun for some Honda blitzing. And the budget is only really allowing for cam, springs and cam gear at this stage.

              its addictive. But whatever you initially think, go one bigger.

              I'd recommend a 288 for the kind of rpm you're looking at, yet still having some degree of power throughout the rev range

                You need induction and head work to make it really rev.

                Stock head and carby won't get much benefit from the cam.

                      Curious what engine this is going in? The thread is in the MK1 section and the only hydraulic MK1s that I know of are cabriolets, the very last ones. All the rest are solid lifter.

                        I common engine transplant for mk1s is a mk3 1.8. These later model engines have hydraulic lifters, as do many of the other large block 4 cylinders from 1985 onwards.

                          LOL I know the transplants, I have done a few in my time. You hadn't mentioned in this thread what motor and I was going to point out that solid and hydraulic cams are very different. Which you know, but others who might read in the future don't.

                          I had a 282 in a 2litre MK1 GTI tears ago, which also had a BV head. That didn't rev to 8000 even before the 2 litre conversion. So I am not seeing yours go that high tbh.

                            I had no intention of being condescending, as you certainly seem to know your stuff. I too am doubting its potential of getting to 8k and have revised my goals accordingly.

                            The specific engine is a later model 1.6 oversquare engine, code AFT. It has more potential for top end power than low end torque, hence the question was asked lol.

                            What was the power delivery like on the high duration 2 liter? Just incase I wanted to track down a cam around the 280 mark [emoji6]

                              It was very driveable as an 1800. The torque was great as a 2 litre but it lost a lot of top end reviness, partly as I had to take the 4 branch off though.

                              The head work was the major thing with both of those motors. Vernier pulley essential.!
