Actually. funnily enough. WE learn squat all. So far its all very much theory based stuff.

I may have come across RHS before. in structures. but I doubt it. I would have just called it box tube, like a poor commoner! hahahaha

Things like thread measurements and stuff, I only know from a machining course I did last year (as part of the course, just covered basic lathe and drill press work, and learnt a few bits and bobs)

Oh and I'm only in 2nd year now. so yea. I geuss I'd learn more specific stuff about stuff later. but i don't know. Uni is pretty useless if you actually want to build stuff yourself. But to be able to calc all the stress's and other smarty pants things like that, well Uni comes in handy for that

on a side note: I wasn't ever a fan of gingerbeer. Didn't like the ginger part. the beer part though, well; that's another story.

Tell me about it... A graduate engineer at work once asked me for a 15mm bolt.. I said 18 TPI? He didn't get it.

Bump to an old thread. Interesting link I found:

That would cost around $600 landed. Not cheap.
Shouldnt be that hard to make either.

babow! wrong again - we're being taught as computer literate engineers.... just wait 'till next year youngin' (i'm in 5th year)

my course taught me basically nothing practical - but most mechanical engineers don't actually do anything practical, its often just organisational work. i guess design work is practically based, but not a lot of mech eng guys get to do that unless they pass up the big pay cheque for a smaller one.

Well, having met a few of the mechanical engineers and engineering students on this forum, i'd say we have more than the average number of "useful" engineers. So i reckon it might be a useful place to hang around for the ones that aspire to be useful..

I went out to grap some parts of a wreck today and as i was leaving saw this unreal oldschool rack setup sitting on top of an old subi wagon. Turns out it was actually off an early '60's beetle. Anyway I sat it on top of my golf and it was the prefect width, fits straight on and is very secure. Only i'll probably lower the rear raisers to follow the roof a little better. At $20, i'm happy. Very similar to that last link, only no timber.
I'll put some pics up tomorrow.

Pics here. It does need a paint. Like the whole body really.

I went out to a property about a half hour past Winsor in Sydney's North West. the guy was advertising a 1978 diesel a few weeks back and is now parting it out. So I grabbed the brake parts and cables i needed. I'll give you his number if your after anything. The interiors been stripped already.

I'm feeling a little guilty about modifying it to suit a golf rather than the beetle. But I think it will look at lot better lower to the roofline

that'll look good once it's dropped down an inch or two.

                            +1 for a great find!

Hey Brom ill give u a hot tip... Do not modify that rack, it is worth a lot of money and an aircooler will pay big bucks for it...

Also it wont look right on a Mk1 as it is suit to the curved roof line of a bug nor the horizontal rood of the Golf...

Please do yourself a favour and dont wreck a good rare rack!

Also with the money u get for the rack u while be able to buy a welder to build a better looking rack for the Mk1

Does Guy harding still make those wood slat roof racks? They were awesome. Dad kicks himself now he didn't get one for mums beetle back in the day.
