  • Gearbox golf cabrio 1990

    hi everyone,

really very in this group, i was hoping to get some advise...and help!

problem: Was driving nicely when the gearbox got jammed in 3rd gear....impossible to go to 4th, 2nd or neutral. Clutch seems ok after a first NRMA quick look at it during towing...

Tried to force it into neutral while engine off, with and without clutch...that hapened once and was able to desengage it no issue since then

took the car to the garage....which obviously declared the gear box gone (as you do) without inspecting it (told them not to put it down as it would cost a fortune in labor)

so I guess the question would be....has anyone experience that before and what was the damage....the price being quoted for a secondhand one is way beyond by budget....I am looking at buying a second hand one from wreckage etc...Anyone knows about 1 Golf 1990 cabriolet 's GEARBOX?

and also any good small trustworthy garage in sydney to do the job???

Thanks heaps for you help in advance...

may i suggest to you the shifter linkages, the bushes are most likley shot mate, if there is no rattle or humming noise while driving, its most likley your best bet, ive gone through a cabrio box or 2 and its usually due to shyte linkages

    cheers

      hey mate,

gearboxes go occasionally, and certainly its possible yours has had it - it does happen. if it isnt the shift linkages (easy to check, just disconnect the shift rods at the gearbox and see if you can select any gears by hand) then you might want to find another box. 4 speeds are cheap (read givaway) items and 5-speeds go for anything between 400-1000 bucks depending on age, condition and rarity.

golf loon on this forum might be able to help you out. he wrecks seat/golf.

I had exactly this happen to my car. The gearbox had to come apart twice before it was fixed. The best advice I can give you is to grab another box and slam it in there.

I had a similar problem on one of my MKIs, except I could get all gears except reverse. New bushes and it was fine. Hope its like that with yours fabs.

My Mk2 Gti did this, it turned out to be the clutch, the springs on the pressure plate broke.
