OK, just spoke to Dave (his dad owned the car when Andrew ran it in the SC) He thinks the car went OS but he will ask his dad for some more details. The car they bought off Kevin Bartlett was bought by a green-grocer in Pt Macquarie by the name of Terry Alderman.
So now you know

A little more info that may be of help ...back in the 80's was a member of norht shore sporting car club and rallied my beetle got to know of a german who bought this car and only navigated in it ...apparently it was rolled and busted up for parts..I was under the impression then this was the Cowan car....no amounts of selley's glue could put it back together..hope this brings a smile Phil..C/V's were the downfall cheers steve

Bluerex, what else do you know about this car?
I am relying on memory here and maybe you could confirm a few things.
It was the 1978 Southern Cross?
I think that there may have been two Golfs entered, the Andrew Cowan one and another (maybe KB?) locally made one that never made the start.
I think that there was a problem getting the Cowan Golf to Australia on time and it just made scruteneering in time in "Dulux" sponsered colours and was repainted the next day in a very rough job with "Selleys" sponsorship.
(Have you thought of contacting VGA for sponsorship for this project?)

Only one Golf shows up on the 1978 result list
But of course if it never made the start, it wouldn't be listed either.
The car used to be owned by the father of another BMSC (Brindabella Motor Sport Club) member. He has been kind enough to go through his dad's things and dredge me up some photos etc. So other than picking his brain, I dont know much more than that. Dave still has fond memories of the car (even though he was kinda young at the time) and has been supportive of my efforts to date. Syncro - if you want to PM me your e-mail address I will forward it to Dave.
As for sponsorship, at the moment Canberra VW have naming rights having committed to a 6 figure package over the next three years..... JUST KIDDING PETER
Seriously though, Pete has been a huge help and the car will certainly be sporting his signage. Have comtemplated contacting Sellys but I might just stick to the same colour scheme without their logos - doesn't seem fair to those businesses that have supported me (Canberra VW, Total Traction Services, my wife, The Battery Terminal, Gasweld, my wife, Millpost Technologies, my wife, Revolution Racegear, Solartint) . As for VW themselves... dunno (any VW staff lurking out there????)
We have some plans for the little car including Classic Adelaide (A maybe at this stage) more "classic" runs as part of the ARC, maybe even a go at the Southern Cross itself (providing it continues its re-birth)
Guess I better learn how to drive now
