Well after another full days work, we can't find anymore rust. Took bonnet, bumpers, front wings, hatch etc off to check - just surface in a few spots.

We also have a contact for welding, for more than likely no cost (friend of my fathers), so it's not all over yet! Just need to establish what we need to purchase to do the repairs (i.e. what thickness steel, mild steel?) and take it from there.

And yea Jimmy we are very keen to own a MK1, so after that bit of good news, we're not ready to quit just yet!

After PM'ing both Jimmy and Matt (thank you guys for your help - much appreciated and have reignited our hopes), we've decided we're going to keep the old lady for the time being.

A question I would like to put out is if we were going to use flat steel, what thickness steel would be required to compensate for the lack of structural rigidity (as the factory floor had recesses), and also what thickness square tubed support beam would be required to also compensate for these changes? Any help or experience with this would be greatly appreciate!

How thick is the original plate? I wouldnt go much thicker than that.

What are you planning to do with the tubed support beam? Weld it across the plate in the same pattern as the recesses? If the wall thickness of your tube is the same or greater than the plate thickness, and the tube size is as big as the ridge depth, it will be stiffer than the original. There's probably lots of ways to get a stiffer plate then the original floor plan (most are probably lots heavier too )

Any idea which directions the car would be trying to bend to bend the plate? (does that even make sense?)

p.s. I'm a civil engineer but have never chopped up a car so forgive me if I'm not being very practical...

I admire you for your persistence and desire in keeping the project alive.

Looking at the pics there is a lot of work to be done. One question, is the subframe OK as I see the floorpan rust went through to the brace under the passenger side pan.

Also depending on the severity of the cut and shut job, the electrics and brake line may need to be removed and reinstalled.

Anything less than a full replacement could be an issue.

Thus the reason roadrunner (76 2 door) went to the great simsmetal crusher in the sky many years ago, it just wasn't worth the grief.

We're in the process of removing everything out of the car at the moment and leaving it as a bare chassis. We'll be propping it up to see the full extent of the damage. If it's fixable, we'll proceed, if not, then it'll be moving onto the next one that we can get our hands on...

But we're not determined to give up yet. It's not over until both of us have said we've tried our best. At the moment, we're aiming to have the the floorpan issues fixed by this easter long weekend if possible, so stay posted. We'll post up whatever happens in the restorations area of the forum.

Its amazing new parts, especialy body panels can be bought for such an old car.
I had to repair a lexus that had been hit in the driver door, we could get all the parts except for a door shell, so it was a write-off, and only around 10yrs old!!!

If that were my Golf (It wouldnt but...) ide repair it. Make sure everything is clean and zink primed and you will be fine. Better than takin it to scrap. And seal it all well, if moisture cant get in, rust cant start!
