Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Product Review - Unix Performance; Adjustable Strut Top Mounts?

    Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone has purchased the following product from Unix Performance?

unix performance — mark 1 bolt on camber plate

As you know, the standard strut top mounts wear out very quickly on MK1's, especially with coilovers fitted. Looking for an affordable (and hopefully) quality alternative?

    Cheers all,

    Michael

    Hey mate,

The 2 things I don't like about them are that they only do camber, no caster, and also because the bearing is located flush with the plate (and the plate is thick and the bearing even thicker) you will lose about 2 cms of shock absorber travel.

This design here is better because you can relocate the studs and get a bit of caster, and the bearing sits up higher than the bottom plate. Strut Tops Plates Camber Adjustable Golf MK1 RED 3D Caster Camber | eBay. Oh and its cheaper too!

I'm not sure if the tiny bit of blue you can just see around the spherical bearing is polyurethane, it would be good if it is to take some of the harshness out of the design but I suspect it isn't. The only ones I have seen that actually do that are the K-Mac ones but they cost twice as much.
