  • GTI Disc and Brake Pad upgrade parts???

After the weekends fun (link)I think I'd like to upgrade the pads and maybe the discs on White. It's already running the GTI Vented disc setup.

What's out there in the way of Pads and discs?

Green, red, blue or yellow stuff?

Bendix street race Track or Ultimate pads?

    DBA rotors?

Any thoughts and where can I get them from?

The pads I smoked were standard Bendix DB-401.
My rotors are standard GTI vented.
Probably need to source some braided lines too. Are ebay ones ok or are they just eye candy for ricers?

This car is also getting a MK III booster and 22mm master cylinder as well as Seat rear discs.

I'd prefer to stay with the 14" MK II Steel wheels so any thing I do has to work with those.

I used the Pagid yellow race pads at $320 set for a little while but found the Bendix Metal Kings to be superior in racing conditions at less than a third of the price. Sure, I never wore out a set as I used to replace them periodically as a matter of preperation. I also used ATE racing brake fluid and this needs replacing regularly.
Braking was never ever an issue during my motorsport, maybe I wasnt fast enough? Some like to go overboard with brakes, I think you learn to handle what you have and good brakes probably only slow you down!!!!
      Cheers!

        Thanks Guys,

I tend to agreee about the size of the brakes. One of the R32s out there on the day was smolking his as well and those brakes are enormous. It's probably a matter of driver competance in managing the brake usage. I'm not too shy to admit that I'm no expert.

I get the feeling that a lot of people are just installing bigger brakes for show. On the street you just can't work them as hard as the track.

The car was running in streeet trim with a full interior and a full tank of fuel. So no it wasn't terribly light. Next time I'll be pulling out the unsed seats and the spare etc. By then I should have figured out the mounting for the race seat and Harness as well which should keep me planted better than the lap sash and stock seat.

ATE GTi spec setup will work well, and fit easy. it's got massive pads and vented discs, so it works well ( set up that I've got) I reckon that, with upgraded brake booster, will be suitable for street usage. PM wabit, an see how he's going with 2 piston audi calipers. they should stop well.

Depends how much you wanna spend really, but the ate GTi setup will be amoung the cheapest imo

Which pads are you running Jarred? I don't think there's any smoke left in my Bendix pads!

Well I just rang Bendix and they don't make the DB-401 in anything other than Standard compound now.

They used to make them in their Metal King Range part no DB-401BM. I've got soemone looking for NOS at the moment.

Metal kings are probably a track only option though.

                Other options?

                EBC I guess.

Now I'm getting confused. This is the type of pad that is on my car.

But I cannot find it in any catalogue as being fitted to a Golf.
It consistantly shows up as an Audi part.

The Pagid catalogue also suggests this is to suit a Lucas caliper. I'll have to check what's actually on the car.

I bought the Calipers and discs from Matt a couple of years back. I don't know the history beyond that. Any ideas Matt?

I got mine disc's calipers and pads complete from Tim (golfworx) a while back, basically brand new. I'm lead to believe ATE had a part in something, but I'm noot sure which part (or parts) or what pads I have, so I can't really help you on that one. All I know is that they're a hec of alot better than the stocks, and I havn't even really pushed/used them yet. (ie, in enthusiastic driving purposes)

Yeah, suspect you've got genuine MK 1 GTI stuff there.

The more I read it looks like I've got an Audi 80 conversion.

Same diameter disc (256mm) I think Think Audi one is 22mm thick and the golf 20mm though.

I don't know which is better yet.

I'll pull a wheel off tonight and have a better look at what's under there.

isn't the audi caliper a twin piston jobbie?

Matt has confirmed these are genuine MK 1 GTI Discs and Calipers, so the search continues.

Ok I'm going slowly crazy trying to figure this one out.

I can't be the only person in the world to wants to put better pads on MK 1 GTI brakes!

So far Bendix has said they only make the standard DB-401 but I might get NOS DB401BM (Metal Kings) if I shop around. Trouble with that concept is the pads on my car are already DB401 BMXP and so were the previous set. So that sort of blows that concept.

Bendix also claim these were only fitted to Audis.

Mintex has standard ones MDB1150 but no upgrades.

EBC has GreenStuff pads (as near as I can figure out) but no standard, red or yellow stuff pads. DP310, DP2310

                            Ferrodo website sucks

                            PBR website sucks

Pagid has Std ones TO291 but no upgrade path and also says they're Audi only.

Am I doing something wrong here?

                            Here's the brake caliper.

                            It's made by Girling.

The Caliper is marked VW AUDI 32321234 CN6 5100
The Carrier is marked 1288 CN3

The disc itself is 239mm diameter and 20mm thick.

                            Any clues?
