Why are mk1/2 3 door golf's so rare in Aus

I know i've just started looking but hopefully I can come across something. I don't have the time or space to work on a car so would be looking for a clean straight car.

3 doors are not popular in many cars over here? Much prefer the lines of a 3 door, and i've a prado for when ever I need to carry folk
