  • Why are mk1/2 3 door golf's so rare in Aus

    Hi Guys,

Ive been perusing online for a couple days to try and find a few over here and cannot find anything that i would be interested in? I'm assuming because they are so rare that they usually change hands quite quickly on forums?

    Thanks,
    Shaun

    Reasons :

    1) Because Mk1/Mk2 are all over 23 years old, not many of them are still on the road
    2) Mk2 3 doors has never been official available in Australia, all of them are private import, that make it rare

Just be patient, since you only been perusing for a couple of days , other people wait for a year to find the right one.

If you have deep wallet, there ins one Mk1 Gti and Mk2 16V for sales in Sydney atm. both of them are 3 doors.

No they don't change hands that quickly they aren't the cars of choice by most Australians only the small band of genuine VW enthusiasts.A good example is the fact that there were no VW Golfs sold for a period of10 years between 1980 and 1990.Then there were only a couple of hundred or so sold till the mk3 in 1994.

I spent 3 months looking and settled for one which i saw on the side of the road and left a note on it for the guy to give me a buzz. I wasnt particularly fussed about 3/5door, but more the state of the car, mine was starting to show signs of surface rust in a lot of places, but no major rust which is why i chose this one.

Basically what I'm saying is take your time and you will find the one that's meant for you, and best of luck

Summer's a good time to buy, everyone gets pi$$ed off with the lack of A/C that their MK1/2 has.

This may upset a few of you...

I'd been keeping a sort of lookout for Mk1's for a while, but nothing too serious as I had no money....
i.e. a Gumtree search a month just to keep an eye on price / condition...

Once I had the money, and I actually started looking seriously, I found and bought one inside of 12 hours...
Got it by calling my local dub mechanics and asking if they knew of any...
Turned out that a client had left theirs at the shop and hadn't payed for the latest repairs.
So, I payed some money to the old owner, payed for the repairs, and away I went...

I've been looking on and off for 12-18 months....not too seriously, but I'd buy the right car if it popped up. The 4 door auto for sale in Brisbane that lasted a whole 24hours was appealing, and even though I was first to contact the seller I couldn't get there straight away and it sold unfortunately. I'd prefer a 2 door manual, but that was a very clean looking original car, which I want.....keep looking, something will pop up eventually.

there's a difference in personality when it comes to how many doors someones car has?

But seriously they are hard to find iv been keeping an eye out for any here in SA and haven't seen any the time I've been looking. About 12 months. Got a 4 door swallow tail and slowly getting it back together but it's needed so much work and parts its been a nightmare. There was actually one came up on gumtree ages ago but the body was completely rotten and the engine was stuffed! He wanted 4 k and wouldn't budge lol
I let that one go !

If that's the case, then I must have multiple personalities...
2dr V 4dr comes down to an individuals opinion.
Personally I like 2dr better (looks cleaner).. but my 4dr mk1 does kick some serious butt!

keep hunting, took me 3 years to find my mk2 and 2 years to find a 2dr swallowtail.
They are out there, just make sure you have money aside for when they pop up.

Speaking of which I may be inclined to sell the 2dr swallowtail as is, any interest, shoot me a message.

I searched for a long while too mate, and never saw 1 suitable 2 door without heaps of rust or a really bad history.

I've had 2 door cars and I do personally prefer the cleaner lines but a good 4 door can look just as nice imo, and with the added extra 2 doors can easily carry more people!

i've been able to get just as many people in my 2 door as anyone would ever need.
