  • Inspecting this mk1 on the weekend. Advice for what to look for? (pics)

Hi, My names Tomek, I normally only post in the mk3 section as I own a vr6 but this particular mk1 has caught my eye and was thinking of inspecting it on saturday.

Not sure what to look for. Is it a piece of ****?

''1979 mk1 golf , fully rebuild motor by team k kustoms last year costing the old owner $3800, 1.8l gti engine , 8v , weber carb , newer model dash , rare gti parts (flared guards , grill ) manual , unreg , doesn't start (motor turns over ) needs a carby overhaul or replacement , car has been sitting for 7 or so months , I guarantee there's nothing major wrong with the engine . When this car was running it went like a rocket .rust bubbles in some areas , sound system, $2000 firm or else I'm fixing it , very rare car with growing popularity . These fetch $10,000 when on road . Worth more in parts !Smithfield area''

That would never fetch $10k on the road even if it was gold plated.
Non runner worth $500 max GTI items not rare.
Popularity waned over the last 5 years.

google about what to look for when buying a mk1, its been answered heaps of times, but main issue is rust, check everywhere. and these 'rare' flares, there was a set on ebay about 2 months ago for $50, and can be sourced new from overseas. just FYI

      Good luck
      Mine: -MK5 Golf 2.0TDI[Deiselgeek sigma 6 shifter + H&R 50mm lowering springs + GTI Tartan interior + Audi 18x8 A6 wheels(Dark Steel)]
      -MK1 Golf The re-spray/re-build
In the family: -MK5 Jetta 2.0TDI, -9N3 Polo TDI, -6R Polo TDI, -Mitsubishi S^$&box van
A pattern seems to be forming...

It isn't that bad IMO, seller only ask for $2000 bare in mind. Late model dashboard worth a fair bit of money.

of course his description is overkill.

As other people said, check for rust. Mechanical for Mk1 is easy fix.

            +1

Looks good compared to others I have seen go for the same price - providing it is an easy fix which might not be something you can hold him to judging by the description. If 2dr would be considered a steal

Can't hurt to have a squizz

As the engine is not running, make sure to check the usuals...
Water in the sump, oil in the expansion tank, compression, spark, any weird noises while cranking...

I'd also jack up a front wheel and spin it to make sure the gearbox doesn't have any weird noises too...

Haggle the price down and buy it, check the entire body for rust, get it running and enjoy it bud, doesn't look in too bad condition, this is the sort of mk1 I was chasing until I bought my $500 rust bucket to save it from the wreckers.
